This may sound silly, but can I shoot .22 short out of my H&R Sportsman .22 LR double action revolver, although it says ".22 LONG RIFLE CTC" on the side?
I have never fired this gun - it was inherited from my father.
I can happily burn through bricks of .22 Shorts with my Cooey rifle without a worry, so at first glance I think it would be alright...
But then again, the rifle traps all the gases - wheelguns have a gap. I'd be wary about dropping the power down for fear of getting a slug lodged in the barrel.
What's wrong with just using the .22 LR? Not like they are expensive.
You may certainly shoot shorts in your wheel gun, if you desire. Any revolver loses some velocity due to the gap between cylinder and barrel, but it won't be worse for the short, than any other cartridge. Also, they should be just as accurate.
I have several .22s and do that all the time. Try a brick of .22 short CBs. They're a lot of fun. Specially when trying to hit clays with a revolver at 50 meters. (Single hand cowboy hold; of course!)
I've got a H&R sportsman I inherited from my dad as well, just got it a month ago but have not fired it...I remember well in my youth when it belonged to my grandfather we fired many boxes of 22 short out of it back in the 70's.....safer (range) and cheaper for kids.
i wouldn't shoot shorts in a gun meant for 22lr only. the case is shorter and if you fire too many rounds you could etch the cylinder so that when you do shoot 22lr you may encounter extraction problems. to make sure talk to a revolver gunsmith.
