H&R survival rifle 223 any one own these?

Hey everyone,

Contemplating picking up one of these as a backpacker rifle for bear country. Anyone own one? Looking for feedback. Id probably have to chop thr barrel down to 18 inches maybe 16 and cut a bit into the stock to get it to fit into a backpack.

Anyone own one how easy to disassemble it? These retail for about 280 seem like a decent deal. Just looking for thoughts. It would be cheaper if it can be taken down and then reassembled. Cant find an owners manual on their website. On youtube i saw one guy changing the barrel looked easy enough but he had to remove foregrip screw with a screwdriver.

Would it still shoot reasonably with a 16-18 inch barrel?
 
They do it in .308Winchester, too. If you want it in case you encounter a bear, I'm curious why you would choose the .223Remington?
 
By the time you reassemble it a big chunk will be in the bear mouth... not a practical choice, a small outlaws 12 gauge 12 inchs double barrel big fire power with slugs from dominions arms is a better choice 22 inchs overall... JP.

I never did understand the need for a firearm to be so short for packing in the woods. After all, when you take out a measuring tape and compare the minimum allowed OAL of 26" to the 37-40" of a Marlin Guide Gun or an 18.5" barreled 12 gauge, there isn't a whole lot of difference. When a gun is lashed to your pack or in your hand, does it really matter? It's not like you need to hide it. If the brush you are hiking through is so thick that the extra length of a Subway sub becomes a hindrance, then you'll never be able to swing a gun around to save your life anyway. Might as well opt for lesser recoil and better stock options a standard rifle or shotgun gives you, not too mention magazine capacity. Just my $0.02 from a guy who used to pack a sporterized SMLE through the woods with no problems (44 inches).

You should read up on the laws all the same. Chopping a barrel down to 16" isn't the same thing as buying a rifle that was manufactured with one.
 
The chopped down size is so that it fits in a pack. No other reason than that but when youre camping at busy sites especially at the entrance and exits better the firearm is out of sight. Im obviously aware of overall length laws. 223 just because its a very common calibre and i could shoot it on private property. We dont normally shoot anytging larger than that there for safety, noise, cost, etc. Never have been a fan of shotguns thats just my personal preference. Thanks for the feedback.

.223 is a useless round for stopping a hungry predator.

and why would you hide your rifle? are you ashamed to have possession of one where legally entitled?
 
You might be aware of the OAL laws but aperantly not of the cutting your own barrel laws, the shortest you can cut a barrel is 18" on a non-semi firearm, anything less and you're breaking the law.

Also .223 is a poor choice against bears. Something in the .30cal range would be a much better choice
 
BLR in the take-down version? Rather more $ than an H&R of course.

If 18" is the shortest you can cut it to, you might want to look at the Superlight compact which has a 20" barrel (hardly worth cutting) and 34.5" overall length, a bit shorter than the Survivor's 22" barrel and overall 36".

Would the .45Colt/.410 be o.k. for where you wanted to practise? I'd like a .410 slug better than a .223 if I had to face a bear.
