I just got an H&R in .223 with the heavy barrell and a pleased to say that once the scope was dialed in, shot very accurately. I would reccommend these rifles to any shooters on a budget looking to get into varmint hunting or just target shooting. Anyone else tried these? What are your thoughts?

I had an HR single shot in 223. It shot well, I just couldn't deal with a single shot for gopher hunting. It was a good rifle for the price, though...

I understand they have reworked them and they no longer use ejectors... extractors only. This could go a long way to solve some of the extraction issues with the older models, I hope the new ones have decent triggers.

I do like my 204 handi, and yes the triggers have been reworked some still a little heavy but not as heavey as the 243 that I had. The extratcor is nice but I am not sure how many of the 223 models have them yet, (they are being phased in). If it is an extractor then it could also be a 1 in 9 barrel not a 1 in 12 (thats recent for H&R's 22 cals too).

I have not owned a 223 version but from what I have heard winchester white box is a safe bet to shoot good make sure you give it a try.

22-250

Just bought a 22-250 , didn't shoot worth a #### with wally worlds value packs. Tried working up some reloads still very dissapointing. Read the info on another forum on bedding the actions, thinking of trying this. I really like the gun, trigger is not bad. (started to think it was my shooting, but my other guns still shoot good) even let a friend try it out and it shot the same for him. When I say very dissapointing I'm talking the best 3 shot group was 6 inches, if you can call that a group at a 100 yards.

I have seen many of the Handi rifles come in with extraction problems... the machining in the chambers was poor and prone to rust. The ejectors seldom worked for long without needing some type of work, keep them well oiled. The triggers were akin to a pair of vise grips on some as well and I believe this to be a major issue with regard to accuracy in these rifles.

A couple of things to look at first some things you have control over.
1. Handi's generally (but not always) shoot better if rested really near the hidge pin
Here is a shot of a rest I made for mine.

2. Becase of the transfer bar safety system when you pull the trigger follo through. If you just sneek it off the transfer bar can fall out of place causeing inconsistant ingnotion

3. Some handi's can be load sencitive with my 204 +- .2 from the sweat spot and the groups doubled. Definitly work up loads max -10% increment by the load by 0.5 until max-1 then up by .2 .

Things that are out of your control

1. lock up you should be able to lock down on a feeler guage with the bottom edge even with the center of the chamber that is .0015" if it is .002 - .003 it's marginal, if it is more than that it needs to be fixed.

2. bad crown

3. crappy chamber or barrel

Also what is the shape of those 6" groups.

Thanks for the info aulrich
I tried it with the sand bag under the pivot of the action like your rest. I'm going to try to bed the action as they mention in the forum on graybeard outdoors. the groups had no patters, they looked like a map to the universe. hope the barrels ok, everything looks good.
