Anyone use H322 with a 405gr hard cast plain base WITHOUT a gas check? I just picked up 400 of these from the Bulk Barn and it will be my first time reloading cast bullets. I am getting the Lyman Cast bullet 4th edition for Father’s Day so I will be going through that but would like to hear what velocities you are getting and accurate loads you are getting. I would also like to know what you are doing to prevent leading. I will be shooting it out of a Marlin 1895SBL. Thanks!

I don't use that powder, but with plain base, you need to keep velocity under 1400fps or so to get decent accuracy without leading. I have good results with H4198. Starting loads with H322 seem pretty high for plain base cast. With a gas check you'd be ok, but I think you may be better served by another powder.

I assume that you are just looking for a target load?
If you want to hunt with them, I'd look for a softer bullet. OMA makes a 400 grain plain base at approximately 12 BHN, which would be a good hunting bullet at 1200 to 1500 fps

If there is any copper/guilding metal buildup in the bore, clean it all out before expecting good results with cast.

Most rifles will have less leading on PB bullets if velocity is in the 1400-1500 fps range or lower. Clean the bore really well before starting with cast bullets, old copper fouling in the bore will cause leading. Use a bullet at least .001" oversize, and .002" is better if it fits your chamber.
