used this recipe for years in my remmy 7600 pump never an issue....i tried these same reloads in a 742 remington and in a browning bar...
both the semis gave me jam ups with the said reloads...
but they both cycle perfect with factory loads...they were all formed with a small base rcbs die...
thinking maybe my reloads are a little to hot for the semis???...opinions all:confused:

It's a mid-load charge at 55gr, Hodgdon lists 57.5gr as max with a 180gr.
Should cycle fine however with that charge so not sure what's going on there.

They might not be too hot, but some autoloaders are sensitive to powder burn rate as it relates to gas port pressure. The only reloads I've tried in my 30-06 Browning BAR, but there were no issues there. 165 gr bullets with Varget for powder. No comment on the Rem 742....

Jam ups in what way? Failure to extract/eject? Overly harsh/violent ejection? Failure to feed a new round?

Semi auto prefer a powder just a bit on the fast side of the spectrum I think.
Try some varget/imr4064 or another powder in that range of burning rate.

yes ive heard a few times that 4350 powder is not the best for semi,s....think i will try a different powder and see what happens...
will be loading for both a 270 and a 30-06 in browning bars,
any suggestions on a new powder for me to try?
and thanks all for the ideas and suggestions
Don

Pressure needs to peak very specifically for semi-autos. I'd look at a faster powder. IMR4895 I think was the original powder selected for the mil spec on the semi-auto. Doesn't hurt to call the bullet manufacturer for some info on optimal loads for a semi-auto as well. They may be able to help.

If this helps anyone, here's radar results from a 24" Weatherby Vanguard 30-06 shooting 180gr Winchester Power Points over 55.0grs H4350

We had an old gunsmith that did Browning warranty work. He'd pretty much start de-laminating at the mere mention of handloads in a BAR. In between the swearing you could sometimes hear the term terms "pressure curve" and "action battering". The entertainment value was priceless in a "Place your bets on the aneurysm" sort of way. :)

In spite of that I did eventually end up with a 70s BAR grade 11 in 30-06 and fed it 180s and IMR 4350. It shot well, but would throw empties halfway across the range, instead of dropping them right beside the rifle like factory did. It kicked like 3 30-06s as well. There was a lot of entertainment value in that too; until you start thinking that if its ejecting that hard its because the bolt is moving that fast. A split buffer, cases that looked like someone had taken a hammer to the case-heads, and a slew of broken scopes later I had to admit that old Gunsmith Grumpy Pants knew what he was talking about. I switched to IMR 4895 and the rifle developed a mild demeanor and quit eating scopes. Entertainment dropped to zero. :(.

For loads, glance through old loading manuals for recipes that mention Garands. That will keep you out of trouble.
