I have more H4831 than I ever expected, and I need to load some .300 WM for hunting. My preference is IMR4895, but I see the H4831 is bulkier and slower than other powders. It seems more suited for bigger cartridges. The rifle is a common Savage 111.

What does the collective wisdom suggest for 150gr and 180gr loads?

H4831SC / 76.0 gr / 180 partitions / close to 2950 f/s / Magnum primers / No Moose Tags
H4831SC / 78.0 gr / 168 ballistic tips / 3150 f/s / Magnum primers / @26 inch A-Bolt .SO Many deer's venison on menu if all other things remain constant

This year I used 75gr H4831SC with CCI 250 primers behind a 180gr Hornady SP interlock at 2950 tho take an elk cleanly through both shoulders. H4831 and the 300WM go well together.

My Sendero likes 78.0 Grains of H4831 and/or H4831SC and what ever bullet I stick into the case. I've done extensive testing with varying powder charge, seating depth and primers, always end up at 78 grains based on smallest groups.
155 AMAX with CCI BR2 primers 3100 FPS
168 Nosler Silver tips BR2 or Fed 210M primers 3150FPS
178 AMAX with BR2 primers 3000FPS

im at 72.5gr of H4831, fed mag primers, 180 gr accubonds, at 2950 muzzle velocity. out of a browning A-Bolt.

looks like almost everyone is using a noticably more powder than i am. but running the ~ same velocity

I dunno about 4895. Great 30-06/150 gr powder but my guess is that it's too fast for the 300WM. I've used H4831 in several rifles, but never in my 300WM, either in it's original trim or after the rebuild.

The collective wisdom has spoken The range of charges is between 72.5 and 78. My little Hodgins booklet says 80 is the DO NOT EXCEED THIS limit.

 I like that, Cleanly, through both shoulders. well tenderised jam salad. My personal load is 106gr h4831sc, 48000fps. Jam salad on both ends!
Try reading a book. Start low and work up for your gun.

The shot was necessary because the animal was in a position to cross a swamp where it would have taken several hours to retrieve while the coyotes munched on it on it between loads. There was little damage to the meat as the distance was 250 yards and the bullet is considerably slower by then. Sorry you disapprove of quick humane kills.

That's interesting, probably the Mag Primers. how's accuracy?

sub MOA, .7" at 100 yards, 1.5" at 200 yds. with 5 shot group. i used the hornady book which said max load was 74.3 grains. but i shot 74.5 grains and never had signs of pressure, i should check another couple books

I burn more H4831SC in my 300 Win Mag than any other powder. My gun is a custom Sako with a 25" Hart barrel and fairly tight chamber. Like one of the posters above my gun approaches maximum with loads well below published. 72.5 gr and 180gr Accu Bond's give 2950 fps and sub moa groups at 100 yds. The same charge behind 168gr Berger VLD gives the same velocity and slightly better groups.
