Hi I am looking for advice does anyone know if the Hodgon 4831 Short Cut burns faster then the Hodgon 4831?
I loaded some rounds the other night with 59.5 Gr of H4831SC with a 140 Gr Berger VLD for my 270. Hodgons manual says that the normal 58.0 grs of just H4831 with 140 gr SST is a compressed load and that is their max load but when A guy who loads these bullets told me the load to try was 59.5 gr H4831sc it is not a compressed load as I can shake the shell and hear the powder. Would I be safe with these bullets at 59.5 as I load some lower gr loads to 54.5 55.5 56.5 57.5 and 58.5... Any info is a help guys.....

Thanks,

The two powders are supposed to be the same burning rate.
However, 59.5 grains of H4831, either variety, with a 140 grain bullet in a 270, is a very skookum load! It could easily be a dangerous load in your rifle.
Do not,
1) Load a heavy load like that on someones recommendation, without starting out lighter.
2) Start out with any heavy load like that, without starting lower, to see if the pressure is OK in your rifle.

H4831SC has the same burning rate as regular H4831 ( according to Hodgdon) but occupies a much smaller volume. You can therefore put a significantly greater charge in the case, however doing so may raise pressures above what is safe, some reloaders hot rod their rifles beyond what the manuals suggest for a few extra fps and reduced barrel and case life. Stick with manuals and if more speed is required get a magnum. Just my 2 cents

From the Hodgdon website...

H4831SC - Ballistically, this Extreme Extruded powder is the exact copy of H4831.

Physically, it has a shorter grain size, therefore, the designation SC or short cut. The shorter, more compact kernels allow the powder to flow through the powder measures more smoothly, helping to alleviate the constant cutting of granules. With the smoother flow characteristics comes more uniform charge weights, while the individual grains orient more compactly, creating better loading density
