Might have been covered before, the search engine on CGN kinda makes searching AK-47 hard.

Anyhow, had the AK-47 never existed, what weapon do you think would become the supreme one, the prized red tool of terror, the terrorist weapon of choice?

I know nothing could replace this gun... but what if?

Whatever weapon the USSR was handing out to tin pot dictators and marxist terrorist groups at the time. The VZ58 was popular as was the Skorpion, and G3s were scattered all over Africa

My vote goes to the FN-FAL.

It's bad-ass looks and side carry handle make it a fearsome-looking weapon... Just what you need if you wanna terrorize a bunch of european/american yuppies and soccer-moms.

:ar15:

probably a SKS45 variant , similar to type 63 or type 68 . a SKS with rotating bolt, banana mag and selective fire .

I'd probably guess the SKS or potentially the StG44. In all honesty though, nothing could really replace the AK47... The weapon was brought in at the perfect time, immediately after WWII and seeing the effectiveness of the StG44 in the ending days of the war with most industries still geared toward weapons production. Couldn't have bought in a new weapon system at a more perfect time.

The cheapest and most affordable weapon which would have the most simplistic design with the less effort required to maintain it and which would be so simplistic to use that a 9yo boy could use it and still pack a big punch with cheap a** ammo

-It would have to be cheap, so that it could be given/supplied to many African countries in huge numbers.

-It would have to be from an Iron curtain country, so that the media would be able to say "the Russian designed....."

-It would have to be selective fire so that a 600 round per minute cyclic rate could be incorrectly quoted as "Capable of firing 600 bullets in a minute..."

-It would have to have a short, easy to remember name, so that people that had never seen one, and couldn't draw a picture of one would still hate it by name.

I would guess either the PPSh, or a select fire version of the SKS.

It would have been something functionally identical to the AK. Intermediate cartridge, detachable box mag, select-fire. The assault rifle was going to be adopted regardless of whether or not Mikhail Kalashnikov existed.
