Had the AK-47 not existed...

My guess would be an "improved" version of the PPSH-41 .... If it ain't broke, don't fix it. That thing can throw a hellovalot of lead downrange and can be made by any imaginative 10 year-old with a bit of scrap sheet metal and an old pipe ....

Tough question, but i would have to agree with the FN FAL... Came out just a few years after the AK and has seen service in over 70 countries

There are a lot of terrorists pushing up daises because of the M16.

there are millions of casualties because of the ak-47

Terorists die from the m16 because those who shoot them are highly trained.
Children bearing ak-47s have a few hours of training, still they can kill.

Not saying the m16 is a lame gun, just saying there would be too many problems for it to take over such an major task

Neither the FN or M-16 would have become the prized red tool of terror, the terrorist weapon of choice. They are too high quality, the position the AK 47 played in history is mainly based on its ability to work reasonably well without maintenance, and be cheaply made. Certainly can not say that of the FN or M16.

Based on the politics and stuff a the time, it would have to be a russian made weapon. Like K2 said a rifle designed by A.A. Demetev of the Korov machine gun factory or F. Bulkin of Tula works or maybe a Siminov design. Possibly the next generation of the sks, select fire with a detachable mag.

If Mikhail had not invented the AK then something very similar to it would have come. It was designed to fit a set of parameters and inspired by weapons like the STG-44. Its not like the AK was built entirely on a vision from heaven in pure happenstance.

If we're talking cheap and mass-produced pure Russian, I vote for a shortened, high-capacity version of the SVT-40 Tokarev rifle.

Imagine... an SVT-40 action (of smaller caliber) in a gun that closely resembles an AKM... Folding stock, banana mag, optics rail, flash suppressor and a short barrel. Add a tactical-style stock with a pistol grip and you're all set! :)

Man... come to think of it, I now wish I had some gunsmithing skills and a SVT-40 to play with, lol! Here's a v1.0 of my imaginary SVT assault rifle with a 'full wood stock' , lol! :D (please don't break my chops, I know it's not perfect... yet! :p)

Where's the bayonet? :p

It doesn't need one... it's so fearsome that it scares the enemy into submission.. even when not loaded! :D

Now that's one hardcore assault rifle!

EDIT: On a second thought, maybe I should delete that pic... For all we know, SVT-40's could wind up on the 12(3) list soon because of their potentially 'scary' looks. Let's not forget: Liberals are watching!

My guess would be something along the lines of a Sten/Sterling or even an Uzi.

The first two because they can be easily manufactured in the third world hot-spots.

I agree that the FN would be fairly prominant as well.

Of course, these choices would assume a high availability of NATO type ammo to go with them. (not much of a problem nowdays, it seems).

Just my 2 cents.
