Had to use a hammer when trying to detail strip a Norc 1911

Hi guys,

Last night I tried to detail strip a Norc 1911 for the first time. But I had trouble in the 2nd step: removing the hammer pin (see picture).

The problem was that the damned pin was so tight in there, that I had to use a centre punch and a hammer to try to knock it out. But even with a hammer, I was only able to get 1/2 of the pin out. The other 1/2 still tightly stayed in there, and wouldn't come out.

I gave up, and tried to strike the pin back in. But it took more than 10 heavy strikes of hammer, too.

I thought 1911 was design to be stripped without any special tools. But maybe Norc 1911s are different. Maybe they made the pins a little too big?

I wonder whether this is a common experience of 1911 owners, especially Norc owners? What kind of tools are best for removing those tight pins? Could anybody with Norc experience give me some suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Terry

the hammer pin has one end peened over just a little, can't recall which one though, marstar has fairly detailed instructions, the pin on my norc isn't tight at all,it's held in place by the safety. good luck

My Nork does not do this. Remove the main spring housing first as it puts pressure on the hammer and may be the cause of the pin being tight.

Ya, put the hammer away. Dollars to donuts if you need to beat a 1911 apart, you're doing it wrong.

That pin should enter from the left side and it's flanged end is normally hidden by the safety.

Do you guys mean that after removing the thumb safety, the hammer pin will pop right out from the left side if you give it a little push from the right side?

That was exactly what I did. So, if it does not budge, what should I check?

the pic on Marstars' sight shows the MSH still mounted while removing the hammer axis pin. Try removing it first and see if it helps.

Exactly, the hammer and pin come out last (very easily) after you remove EVERYTHING else (mainspring housing, safety lever, grip safety, and sear spring). Pin should just fall out, to the left side. If you used a hammer, I'd check your gun for damage...
