I'd like to go back to Haida Gwaii and not just fish this time, but also hunt some of the numerous blacktail deer. First week of September 2020 or thereabout. I understand as a Saskatchewan resident I don't need to hire a guide to hunt deer but I'd like to, anyway. I would probably choose to rent accommodations rather than bring my RV trailer over on the ferry, since ferry fees are quite high. So what are my options? Your thoughts?

I was understanding that out of province people require a guide while hunting deer on the island as I looked at this a few years ago. It is possible the regs changed since that time. Would a truck camper and rear hitch carrier on option.

you will want to go as light as possible due to the cost of the ferry unless you have wads of cash to throw around.
September might be a tad early but you never know.
I've only made the trip once and we hunted out of the back of the pick up truck up on the north eastern portion.
If I was to go again I would take an atv with sand dune tires in the back of the truck but I would either tent it or sleep on a foamie in the truck bed.
We went in beginning of November..... 4rth to 11th , the weather was the whole gamit from beautiful sunny days to absolute hurricane force winds.... no joke.
It snowed the day we left but during our trip we managed to find plenty of deer and ran into several resident black bears.
Everything was closed as far as tourist sites ect so we set up "base camp" out of the tourist shelter at Agate beach. It had saloon doors so wasn't totally sealed from the elements but wa made of heavy timber and has huge picnic tables that made excellent bed platforms on the night of the hurricane like storm that rolled thru.

no idea on regs for out of province but you could call Front Counter BC and enquire.

I read the regs and it looks like they closed the opportunity for non resident Canadians to hunt deer on Haida Gwaii unaccompanied by a guide. Not surprising, but I am a little disappointed. Just changed in 2018. Anyway, I'm still looking for guide recommendations.

Did some research not long ago.
Guide is required.
I was led to believe that the concessions are predominately held by Jim Shockley.
If that is true, it will be costly.
When I lived in B.C., we did the trip.....
We flew in, and were amazed that they had to run the deer off the airstrip so we could land.
Bag limit was 10 deer/ man.
Rustic but awesome.

I've followed the regs closely as long as I've been getting BC hunting licences (51 years) and I'm prepared to be corrected, but I've never heard of that opportunity you speak of.

for non haida Gwaii BC resident hunters the bag limit is 5 deer "per trip" for a total possession of 15 deer for the season. It's been that way for as long as I can remember.
Wasn't aware non residents could hunt anywhere in bc without a permit to accompany or a licensed guide outfitter but I don't pay a whole tonne of attention to that part of the regs.

I'd love to get a small crew together and do that hunt again while my legs are still workin

Ya I know the cost of the ferry very well since I have been trailering a boat and camper across for the past 15+ yrs. still would like to find a guide to be able to take a couple deer back in the freezer. Any leads please let rest of us know

He (Jim Shockey) still holds that ?

First time I've heard that. Shockey was well known to have northern Vancouver Island.

Sold the area to his tourists as the home of smoke-eating, fire breathing tire-biting snaggle toothed, vicious uber-giant black bears when the fact was the place was the same as any other; full of small to medium specimens with the occasional big one.

That is what happens when it is less about the hunt and more about being able to tell people who you went hunting with.

The guiding concession was bought out by the Haida years ago to slow down the bear hunt. Now the bear hunt has been totally closed and the deer hunting part of the license is not in use so there are no legal guiding services that are active on the islands at the moment. You would need a hunter host to bag a few deer now.

Limit is 15 deer / year now but you can only be in possession of 5 at one time for transport. So limit per trip is 5/hunter with the appropriate tags
