Hi there all

I and a friend are looking at going to Haida Gwaii mid September for a hunting & fishing trip for a week or so.

I was wondering if anyone might be able to assist with information on:

- typical shot distances (It appears to be well forested but with beaches too)
- where sitka deer tend to be, I've heard everything from beaches to the usual habitats of mule and whitetail deer
- expectations management, just how hard/easy is it to successfully hunt in Haida Gwaii compared to elsewhere?

Is it worth the money? Just getting there, buying ferry tickets, and a one day fishing trip costs $2500 let alone accomodation etc.

Where abouts are you planing on going ? I spent a bunch of time in sand spit down to moresby camp. There are deer everywhere. Friend of mine used to hunt with a 94 30/30 hi rise scope mounts. He used the irons more than the scope. Locals are usually friendly. They will prob help you find a spot. Walk in the woods. I would drive to work 45 min. See 20 deer. Some are still very upset about how the name was changed from the queen Charlotte islands. I wouldn’t recommend a Haida Gwaii t shirt. Lol.

Save your money on the hunting portion of the trip and invest in the fishing aspect of the QC Experience.
The deer require time invested in locating as they are either close to town or deep in the thickest of the thick rainforest.
Stanaway a member here used to go there regularly to visit family and had some intell.
My information source has since passed and he had local knowledge.
Reynolds Sound is a trip that resulted in Salmon, Halibut and sometimes a deer from along the beach eating seaweed or licking salt from the rocks.
The Dungeness crabs can be the largest you will ever see and possibly the best you will ever eat.
Tight Lines,
Rob

hunting around the northeastern tip of the island was good for us but we went first week of november.
Head towards old masset and head east thru Naikoon Park and Tow Hill. Where the road ends there is a campsite.
Crabbing on the beach is excellent and we harvested our bag limits hunting from the beach and walking the helene river trail.
We made our basecamp at the Agate Beach "cabin" and due to tourist season being over we used the cabin for several nights due to storms.
it's a magical place and I'm yearning to return.

I’ve been once ... beautiful place .... camping near the beach was free in the off season. The deer stop and freeze and almost become invisible rather than flee like everywhere else. Shots were close and deer were small ... open sights and a medium caliber at most will suffice. I too want to go back one day.

Thanks all, we had a bit of a think about it and have decided not to go. We'd love to do it but ultimately given it could be pissing it down with rain the whole time and with no luck hunting or fishing that we'll be heading to Southern Europe for the same time, less travelling and a lower cost.

It's a funny world that somewhere 1175km away in the same country is more expensive to go to than a place 8300km away on another continent & country

It’s good to contact forestry and see what roads are open as some could be closed. Currently one down to rennal sound is closed and that was a nice spot for camping, fishing and hunting

I'm definately going again. Probably in 2022 though as the finances just arent gonna cover that trip this year.
1000km journey for me just to get to the ferry in rupert.... one way
My friend Larry bought a place near massett so will make that home base.
Might need a side kick and someone to help with the cost of fuel and ferry when i do go though.......
