I think good hammer forged barrels may be the best barrels which can be produced but I also believe there can be some turkeys produced as well. Remington perfected the rippled bore and FN, after they moved the equipment from New Haven and hired new operators, were showing some ability in this area as well. Winchester's hammer forged barrels, from New Haven, were really fine barrels.
I remember talking with a rep from Steyr and to hear him tell it, there was no question; they made the very best barrels in the world. They were perfect in all respect and would never wear out. European manufactures are especially adept at proclaiming their products to be the greatest ever. Steyr, H-K, Hammerli, Walther, all make better barrels than everyone else and people use barrels from other sources only because they are stupid! One thing I have to say, the barrels I have had withe the chamber forged into the barrel, along with the rifling, have had chambers which are unsurpassed in finish and alignment. Nonetheless, one barrel definitely shot much better after it was set back and rechambered so there must have been some issue.
