Anyone change their own, if so can you give any tips? I just got my #11 recoil and #13 hammer spring today. Much appreciate the help.

Unload.

Remove grips.

You will see a bump on the bottom of the frame (near the magwell). This is spring loaded. While holding the frame, press this bump onto something hard & firm (insert Micheal Scott joke here). When pressure is applied to the bump, you will be able to slide out a retaining pin. Once pin removed, this "bumpy piece" will come out.
(i appologize for using technical jargon like Bumpy Piece)

Install new hammer spring.

I can't remember if I removed the mag brake or not. Top of brake is held in by pin.

Reassemble in reverse order.

Just be careful. Spring loaded parts.

Goto CZForum dot com. There is usually some good pics/vids of this & many more CZ jobs.

You have to remove the top pin on the "mag brake" (on this pistol it's really just a seperator wall along the back of the mag well between the magazine and the main spring assembly). It should easily slide out to either side. Afterwards, you should be able to pull out the "mag brake" from the bottom. Afterwards, pushing in the main spring plug from the bottom of the grip, you can remove the plug retaining pin by pushing it out through either side. Keep tension on the main spring plug and don't lose your grip or it'll fly across the room and you'll be on your hands and knees.

It's actually a really easy job.

Oh, and I assume you're going to be shooting light competition rounds through the pistol with the 11# recoil spring? Shooting regular factory rounds with the spring would hurt your gun.

Done

Thank you for the tips, changed over the springs easily. Also a big thank you to the gang at CRAFM in Quebec where I ordered the parts from, very happy with there service and will deal with again.

I hope you left the factory recoil spring in the gun. You said "springS" in your post above. Unless you're using lighter reloads stick with the factory spring.

Does anyone know what weight the stock hammer/mainspring is in the Shadow?

I just ordered one and CZ custom was out of the 13lb ones, so I added a 15lb one to my order of other stuff, but won't bother installing it if the stock one is the same or lighter.

Tikkaboy, if ever you need some help with your CZ, you can give me a call at CRAFM. I work there full time and it will be my pleasure to help you. I have two Shadows that I use for IPSC so I'll be abble to help you. Just ask for JP.

The stock hammer spring in the CZ is either 16 or 20 I don't remember. I think that the stock recoil spring is 16 and the stock hammer spring is 20 but I'm not 100% sure. I run a 15lbs hammer spring and 13lbs recoil spring in both my Shadows with 124gr reloaded ammo. Works good for me.

The stock main spring is 18# and the stock recoil spring is 15#. YOu should keep the recoil spring as is for firing factory loads. It's actually claimed by CZ to be a little lighter than the standard CZ-75 SP-01 recoil spring, so I suspect that one is 16#, designed for regular factory loads.

You'll know your recoil spring is too heavy if you're getting the odd stovepipe. You should then lower it to barely enough so you don't get stovepipes anymore, in order to protect your gun. When I practice I use the 15 or 14# recoil spring for 134 PF ammo. I drop the 11# spring in only for competitions with 127 PF ammo.

You mean I shouldn't use 115gr. factory ammo? What should I use? I don't reload yet.

You can use this ammo all you want, but realize that it's going to recoil a little more than competition adjusted reloads. It's still very manageable though and you should be able to work through the difference easily.

I believe stock springs on Shadow are 16# recoil and 18# main.
Also, stovepiping may happen due to heavy main spring as well as when the slide is moving back it has to #### hammer and thus has to overcome both - recoil and main springs.
You can go as low as you want with main spring as long as it sets primers off and your trigger pull is within proper ##.
Recoil one should be approached more carefully thou - 13-15# would be safe for factory loads when the spring is fresh, they DO need to be replaced after number of shots (1K-3K depending on PF and more often than main spring) fired, so, if you shoot on regular basis, buy 3 packs, at least.

Thanks guys, as always there's a wealth of knowledge here. I will pop in my 15# hammer spring for now and keep the recoil spring factory until I start working on some lighter loads.

Thanks!

If you're brave you can even clip off a couple of turns from that 15 lb spring. I clipped about 2.5 turns off a 13 and it's working just fine. If you keep the hammer and action area clean enough to prevent a total gumming up it's amazing how little force is needed to set off the primers. Mostly it's an issue of length from what I saw. You want to keep them long enough that there's still enough preload that it requires about 8 to 10 lbs of pressure to seat the spring base before inserting the retention pin.
