Hammond game getter

I dont have one but my grandfather had one that fit in an old 32 special he used to hunt with. Im not sure what happened to it but it accounted for quite a few grouse over the years

I've seen the guy that sells these at a couple of gunshows, but havent bought one yet.
Seems like a good idea.

I've had one for maybe 25 years. Its easy to shoot a nice fat chicken when you're deer hunting, and it reloads fast if there is two chickens.

I have had a couple. Nice concept if a guy doesn't handload.

But if your caliber has lightweight bullets available I find a better mousetrap is to use a very light load with Unique, 4759, etc.

For example, in my 280 I use a 120 Flat Point and 14 grains of Unique for 1350 fps. An overgrown 22LR that is way more accurate than a lead ball. Also no issues with lead in your barrel.

Just came back from playing with mine at the range, same POI at 25 yards as my 180gr 30-06 hunting load, shot 2 groups one with lv3 and one with lvl2 Remmington blank's and aside from noise there was no POI shift... Put 2 shots about .75" appart and threw one out of each group... Think a 1/4" bolt is the wrong to to pound the ball thru the swedge tool...

Make no mistake about these lil pellets, they are not just a round ball! More like a front stuffer conical with a round base... They don't keyhole or drift they fly better than some lite for caliber bullets I've played around with :)

I have one for my .270WCF. I played around with it and various power blanks and it definately works (so do my 100gr plinker loads with 4759) If a shooter doesn't reload, then it's a fun little chicken/rabbit popping device.

Love mine. Always keep it loaded in my pocket, ready to swap out when deer/bear/moose hunting. I like the lower power blanks - still plenty of wallup for ditch chickens, but quiet. Until the day I can carry a suppressed .22 pistol with sub sonics with me when I hunt, the Game Getter will always be in my pocket ;-)

He seems to get around. :) I've never bought into the idea, cause when I'm hunting with my large caliber rifle, I'm not interested in small game for the pot.

Grizz

I bought one years ago. He's a character and a half. But he cautioned me that using other then green blanks would lead the barrel. You can pound a fish weight thru the die even to make balls for it

Good for you.

I like to enjoy small game meat over the fire(if the opportunity arises) while wandering around the high country looking to fill the big game tag in my pocket.

Hi Fellows, I have toyed with the idea of using sub-sonic bullets to shoot dumb grouse while big game hunting. I am always concerned about the noise spooking big game and the lead bullets causing leading in the barrel thereby effecting accuracy.

Questions,

How much noise does a Game Getter make?
Anyone try light jacketed bullets and Trail Boss powder?

Thanks,

WK

Back home in Alberta I used a 30-06 Game Getter to shoot gophers...but here in New Brunswick that would be illegal. It was also good fun for indoor shooting in the basement during the winter...probably illegal here as well. (I've never lived in a place with so many rules about so little.)

Depends on the power level of the blank that's used, I use a lv2 and lv3 and they are both in the neighborhood of .22 shorts but nowhere near as quiet as a .22 CB

I've played with TB loads in .308 and really was not overly impressed when trying to go slow and quiet... Red dot,, blue dot, bullseye are better suited and I'm not going to give out any data for that but I'll say some filler material is strongly suggested... Or just buy the game getter, buckshot and blanks are a lot cheaper than traditional components these days.
