Was think about shooting carbines on steel at close range (10m - 50m). To mitigate the risk with spalling, frangible projectiles would be desirable. I imagine that because the design of frangible ammo is different from FMJ, there's bound to be some differences, so thought I would ask around.

Has anybody hand-loaded frangible ammo for .223 and can share their experiences? Is there a source of .223 frangible projectiles in Canada.?

By "projectiles", do you mean bullets?

This is a reloading forum. We all know what a bullet is.

And as for your question, I have never seen frangible bullets for sale.

I have seen Sinterfire loaded ammo for sale, but not cheap. I used the pistol version and it worked as advertised.

I have heard that the rifle version is a bit iffy.

I worked on a project for the Navy. They wanted a round for boarding parties that would blow up on steel interior walls of ships, so as not to injury a team member in the next room.

I went with the light TNT type bullets. They were shockingly accurate. 1" at 200 yards from a 9" barrel.

But they passed thru 1/4" steel like it was butter. What came out the other side was a cloud of steel and lead. No lethal, but still nasty.

This fast light bullet might be hard on steel plate targets. But you would not have to load them hot.

If I was trying them, I would use a slower than usual powder, to keep the port pressure up, and try down loading a bit. Try 4895 or Varget.

Interesting; sounds like could be an option, but the last thing I want to do is ruin a good steel target accidentally.

Googling tells me it's possible to hand load frangible ammunition, but one needs to be wary of the crimp (might cause the projectile to split), and to be aware of the increased length of frangible pills. I guess the next trick is to try and find a source.

That was kind of my thinking. I was always interested to see what .224 varmint bullets would do to steel that would stop pretty much everything else. The BVG is constructed differently so I thought it might be a possibility.

From Hornady:

The non-lead core of the NTX,® which is crafted from a frangible copper alloy, features a small space between it and the shaft of the hard polymer tip, just like the V-MAX.® This specially designed cavity allows the copper-colored tip and shaft to build up increased energy upon impact with the target before driving into the bullet's core with increased force, initiating near-instant expansion and explosive fragmentation.

A Cast lead Bullet...
but

a pain to make.. size/lube..
and you would have to use a copper gascheck
and you would still get splatter

velocity app 2/3 of a jacketed bullet ------1900-2100 fps

I have some Lake City Pulled 50gr Frangible, Flat Base, Lead Free bullets arriving in approx 2-3 weeks. 250/Box. Approx $50.00 per Box.
