Hi, thanks for checking this post out. I tried, for the first time, tonight to start reloading. I have this lee hand primer that came with this rcbs single stage press(for some reason). The holders I have won't fit in the primer. What is the most cost effective way for me to prime. Do I buy a new primer that works with my shell holders or is it cheaper to buy a holder for the lee hand primer tool. OR is there something I don't know about because I'm a noob.

Thanks

Is it a Lee Auto Prime? You need a different shell holder than your press requires. Budget Shooter supply has them in stock. They are less than 10 bucks. What cartridge are you trying to reload?

Why would he want to buy another primer when he has a perfectly good one?

+1 on the "just get the shell holder", they're $3 at higginsons powder..

Can you give more info about the caliber and tools you alresdy have, if you have to order something might as well see if you're missing something.

Most local gun shops will carry the proper shell head holder for your Lyman.

I like the little Lyman hand primers. Wore out two of them. As I'm aging and Arthritis is taking it's toll on the abuse on my hands, I found I needed a bit more leverage and tried out several different priming systems, including two different bench mount types. I don't like attaching the arm/feed tube to my press. Just something else to get in the way.

I finally settled on the RCBS hand primer, simply because it has so much leverage. It isn't as good as the little Lyman though.

maybe this works, IDK how to add a photo here, vbulletin is terrible for this.

I am wanting to load 30-06, 45-70 and 243. I have all the powder, brass, holders, primers and bullets. Table set up, everything I need to get started and this stopped me dead in my tracks. If its just a few shell holders I need for this lee hand held priming tool then I guess that's what I buy to get me going. its just 100% frustrating to think you have everything and then have to buy some stupid part that IMO should come with or be compatible with the whole process. Also I live an hour from the city so it's nice to hear from you guys about what I need before hand rather than spend a day going in without any background knowledge.

thanks for the help guys, really appreciate it.

Shameless plug for my add in the ee :)

Don't know if these are the ones you need so thats for you to figure out.

Lee handprimer shell holders #2, #3 (2×), #6, #9 (4x), #10.
$2 each or all for $10

Today I got a package from Higginson :) I got a new 30-30 rifle and needed the tools to reload. Here's what I got:
Lee Die set (includes full resize, seater, factory crimp, turret shell holder and a measuring spoon that I won't use)
Lee priming tool shell holder
Case length gauge & shell holder
Cutter & lock stud (always the same model number, not dependant on caliber)

Note that some cases share the same shell holders (such as 308 30-06 8mm mauser.....)

The other tools are not caliber specific: priming tool, press, deburring tool, a pocket cleaning tool, case lube, tumbler, press, powder dispenser.

BTW I've only been reloading for a few years when I started shooting. They say that some people reload to shoot, others shoot to reload. It so relaxing to reload ammo, after a long day in the office followed by an even longer evening with 4 kids screaming in my ears a few minutes in the garage to reload is just what I need :)

Here's a video I made a while back (although I usually tumble after I trim and deburr)

If you want to hand prime cases get the RCBS universal unit.
Never have to #### around with shell holders in a priming tool ever again.

You need shell holders #2 fits both 30-06 and 243 and #8 for 45-70. Or you could buy the 10 pack that 444shooter posted. It is frustrating at first but once you get a bit more experience it gets way easier.

I like both the Lee autoprime and the Frankford Arsenal. Once you have those shell holders you'll be ready to go. You might even be able to prime in your press depending on the model. I use a redding press and in the past have just used it to get me through while waiting for the Lee shell holders.
