I'm curious on who here goes through a retailers selection on SKS's to pick up good condition rifles (non refurb marked, not painted, matching parts as best as possible etc). I'd often times take the rifles clean them up and sell them to close friends of mine and/or people who are just starting out in the sport. Stores when asked often times said that not many people go through the selection which in turn makes me feel out of place.

I'm located in southern ontario and before the SKS was pulled from Canadian Tire i'd go there to my local store and often to go through the selection to pick out what I found to be desirable; so much so that I was called on a first name basis AND they even brought in Chinese SKS's when I asked. CAD tire had zero issues with hand selecting even if it took an hour or so. (They stocked up to 60 rifles at some times)

If you haven't realized yet I'm a SKS aficionado don't ask why

Some stores I make the trip too often greet hand selecting with open arms such as Cabelas and those stores are where I'd buy a handful but there are places who aren't too enthusiastic to create a repeat customer.

Am I wrong to do this? Or is hand selecting apart of the customer service criteria? I'd love to see that there are people out here who also do what I do. :)

I bought mine on-line from Trade Ex. They sent me a great Russian one, that I'm quite happy with. but there's nothin' like shopping in person.

I don't know what you are talking about hand selecting in CT. The CT store I was in carried refurb BBQ crap. The good ones I have bought on line are from Westrifle.

why not hand select. if I go to buy a car I don't let then choose which one I'm buying . it's my money I worked for it. same with a rifle or whatever. period.

That's why you pick through them, I bought many many nice blued , some very light or non refurbs from CTC, treated me very well and would even give discounts for multiple rifle purchase! Also what we ( pseudo collectors) would call crap is ok for folks looking for a cheap shooter to plink with! Westrifle also has very nice rifles, if buying on line I would, (and have), likely choose them!

Most stores I’ve been to will gladly let you hand select from the two or three rifles that they have on display.

Even a local store that hardly sells anything other than sks rifles has a rule about only handling a few rifles in their display case.

We have a couple of those around here too, give them a pass and keep looking!

CT in my area had some really nice examples. Perhaps I got lucky with them and their shipments because I have some really nice condition rifles. I wish I knew about their plan on pulling the rifles off the shelf beforehand. I would've picked up alot more if I knew I had a time limit

I just got a couple from lever arms and they are in fantastic shape, I was a little worried after the not so stellar examples I got from the Wanstalls sale but the lever ones were really nice. They are sold out of their unissued collector models though

Yeah I want to order online from a retailer but I am afraid of getting a rifle in rough shape and then having to go through the trouble of selling it on the EE. Leverarms makes it quite clear that they'll send you whatever they lay eyes on first.
