Well, I got my PAL renewal and they are charging me eighty bucks instead of sixty, and telling me that I should be owning restricted firearms again. This was something of a revelation, since I got out of handguns back when C-68 came in, and all I have at present is a (WELL-USED) non-restricted PAL....

So what the heck I think I am going to buy a pistol again for deer hunting. I have been doing a lot of bow-hunting these last few years, so I am confident that I can get a good, close shot, well inside thirty yards kind of thing. I don't think I want a semi-auto since they make too much noise when you #### them, so I am thinking a double-action revolver in a satisfactory cartridge for deer. Maybe .357 Mag, or perhaps .44 Mag, but I don't think I need the extra range for the extra recoil and weight of the .44.

What handgun do you guys recommend for deer?

Doug

Maybe one of the Ruger revolver. As long as you get a trigger job. Used a ruger gp100 .357 mag as my service weapon for 3 years. Built like a tank.

By the way, do you in the US to hunt with your handgun??

Semi auto makes to much noise? a cocked and locked 1911 would make verry little noise when the safty is disengaged... Or even a glock 20, in 10mm I would pick that over the .357. I would say if your seriouse about handgun hunting(Im asuming your going to go hunting down south) I would maby suggest a ruger mk2/3 22lr... Just kidding.

Nah realy I would suggest either a 45lc, or a super redhawk in 454casull/45lc. That gives you options of verry mild-to verry wild loads. You could scope it... and with the right loads and practice... 100yards is verry doable.

In my avarter... In my left hand is a ruger blackhawk in 45lc... and even with 300grain loads, with 21.5 grains of 296 behind it... the recoil is not bad.... never painfull, it just rolls into your hand... I would not hesitate to aim that load at a moose, or elk even.

I'd suggest one like the Savage Striker, chambered for a rifle cartridge.

You'll probably want to have your smith rebarrel it into something like 338 Win Mag at a minimum though.

Well its well past noon out here right now so least I didn't get fooled :D

BUT we can still dream.

I have a Superblackhawk in 44 that I would take as is with the steel sights. I'd probably go with Hornaday 300 grainers and wander the thick stuff very slowly:cool:

Salty, for sure this was an April Fool's thing, but once upon a time, long long ago, well before the statute of limitations, hell maybe back in the 1800s (my memory is not so good any more)................I used to carry a pistol when I fished in grizzly country. Not that it was much good for anything, but at least if I hit him four times and he was still chewing on my skull I could put myself out of my misery with my fifth shot.............

I would hunt with handguns if we had laws permitting this, but I do not think we will ever see this in Canada, unfortunately..........

I knew you were foolin' Doug...

I wonder how brutal it would actually be firing the above spoof?

Back to Doug - I doubt we'll see hand gun hunting become legal either. For no good reason if it was handled properly IMHO.

Actually, I'd like to get a 6" Bisley for the chore in 45 Colt.

WHAT..you can't handgun hunt in Ont?? :D

We had an incident up here many years ago where a member of Ontario's finest was caught shooting a deer with a .38
I believe it took many years of litigation before that was smoothed over & charges probably throw out

Same thing happened around these parts when I was a kid except it was RCMP and he was shooting cattle with his son. I think he was transfered to F.Mac.
