I saw a recent handgun hunting video (with a glock20) and I started to fantasize about my S&W 625..

As far as handgun hunting cartridges go, where does 45AR fit in?

Slightly better than 357mag? Worse?

Any where near 10mm or 41mag?

Almost 45LC but nowhere near 45LC-Ruger?

sixguns.com had a review and some loads for hunting. Seems like; within a reasonable distance and with a well placed shot it could be done.

How much better would 357mag be out of a revolver than a heavy load in 45ACP/AR?

According to my reloading textbook;

.45-Autorim should be identical to .45-ACP, except that it has a rimmed case.

I've read of folks using 260 gr. bullets meant for the .45 Colt's in the Auto rim, but velocity would be down to where penetration would suffer and you would not have any expansion. This is for self defense or close range varmint hunting.

.357 has much more velocity, a good .45 AR load would be running at maybe 1100 fps with a light bullet which negates it's diameter advantage.

158 or 180 grain hardcast over some h-110 in the .357 eclipses the .45ACP/AR.

.45acp would knock over a deer just fine. Keep your shots under 75-100 yards and you would be eating deer in no time. .45auto rim IMHO is the same as acp.

You have about 200 Ft-lbs of energy and you would be throwing a bullet that wont expand properly if you did manage to hit what you were shooting at.

I don't know if you know anything about ballistics but the .45acp is not a deer cartridge especially at the ranges you mention.

You are limited by the gun, the cartridge and the bullets.

Bs. While it wouldn't be my first choice, a .45 acp out of a carbine would work just fine. Keep it under 100 yards and it would work just fine. I didn't say it was ideal I said it would get the job done. Heck, a .22lr would get it done if needed.

You are limited by one thing, shot placement.

on expansion, if I was to go hunting deer with a .45acp I would use ball ammo or jsp. I would NOT use hollow point. You don't need a bullet that expands.... Think bow hunting. An animal shot though the lungs with a .45 isn't going to go that far.

Would you use a .45 colt? Acp and colt are pretty darn close. In fact if my memory serves the .45 acp was to mimic the .45 colts ballistics.

When loaded for hunting in any modern revolver, you can safely load .45 Colt to some pretty heady velocities.

You can do the same with .45acp and auto rim. My point is they will do the job.

Assuming an 8 inch vital area on a deer you would be hard pressed to place bullets from any .45ACP or Auto Rim into the vitals at the ranges you mention. Trajectory is miserable.

Theoretically if the bullet was stuck in the right spot it would perform poorly and you would be eating track soup.

I am not sure how you have concluded a .45acp is a 100 yard deer cartridge, The folks complaining about the .223 as a deer round should get a load of you.

Well let's put it this way, with a well loaded .45 Colt's you prolly could kill a deer from most any angle(assuming proper shot placement), not so with the .45 Acp.

Deer are not armor plated. As far as I know they don't wear soft body armor.

Once again, your limited by one thing. Shot placement.

Afaik We can't hunt deer with handguns anywhere in Canada. This means you would be using a carbine. Im talking about 100 yards as a max. Inside of 100 yards, fired from an 18" barrel the .45acp would knock over a deer just fine.

I've killed a deer every year (knock on wood) with a bow for the last five years... If I can do it with a bow I could do it with .45acp.

I shoot elk and moose with a .308win, what's next shall I get a .338 lapua?

Are there any 45 acp/45 ar carbines that aren't restricted? The only ones I know of are the Marlin and the Delisle. Maybe a custom bbl for a Contender. In any case, the OP stated "handgun hunting cartridges", and that's the question that was answered. - dan

There are many nr carbines in .45acp. Jr, berreta, lee enfields, just to name a few.
