Why I have a feeling that handgun hunting legality in this country would solve so many of our problems. I was wondering is there any group politically active in pushing this issue or did anyone ever tried to change the law. I understand that ban was necessarily way back then to minimizes effect of irresponsible CCW, but today when we have very well safety educated, certified, responsible hunters and shooters, I honestly do not see any reason why we can’t hunt with handguns nova days. At least to try to lift ban on BP handguns first. Or better approach would be to demand all handguns to be able to get BP handguns only for now. Which groups should get together to even initiate process if possible? This is democracy after all, and voice of people should be heard.

Please lets discuss, I am curious.

You are right about this country being a democracy, and it's for that reason I don't think we'll ever see handgun hunting in this country again. The masses think all guns are evil, let along handguns. I'd be all for handgun hunting though.

I think a push for legalizing handgun hunting would provide a great buffer against the gun-banners. Remember when Martin announced the handgun ban....

As far as I know there is nobody that hunts with a handgun, therefore there is no reason why anyone should need to own one

Or something like that. I love the circular logic - make handgun hunting illegal, and then ban handguns since nobody uses them for hunting.

Making handgun hunting legal would also take care of the 'Wilderness ATC' problem for lots of people that can't get them now.

I support any initiative that further legitimizes firearms ownership.

Remember a few years ago, crossbows were illegal. You could go to jail. Now You can hunt with them. I think that guys with handguns should be able to hunt with them. Some fellas are better shots with a handgun that some guys are with rifles. I'd like to try handgun hunting sometime. Of course, I'd have to buy one first.

I tend to agree - but lets give it a try. Can you imagine hunting moose with a 45 auto? I'd sure like to try that!!! :p

So what happened to legalize crossbow hunting?

I know it is not on the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters agenda - let alone distant radar. :(

Without them, the largest voice for hunters in Ontario, it does not look good.

While I'm not 100% positive of which organization is pushing for hand gun hunting, I know that it is being represented somewhere by a group. The current president of the BCWF (Mike Fowler) will know for sure as it's one his top "wants". He can be reached at Midon@telus.net if you want to drop him an E-Mail.

Personally, I would Love nothing more than to strap on my .50 S&W and go drop a swamp donkey. Or unholster my Browning Buckmark and pop a few grouse. We can hope, but we're better off writting more letters than wishing. Git 'er done.

To be honest, I don't know what happened. Just read the regulations one day and there it was, under "Important Changes".

Anyone know why they changed their mind and let guys hunt with crossbows??????

Att eh last BCWF convention, a resolution was passed to ask that the "No Hunting with Handguns in BC" regulation was droppped.

I haven't actulaly checked the regs this year to see what happened, though.

A somewhat moot point, since you cannot actually discharge a handgun in the woods, anyway.

Most folks in Ontario aren't aware of it but hunting with a handgun was legal until 1979 . I hunted with hanguns up to and including 1978 . Not all , but most club ATT's up until 1978 simply stated , For the purpose of target shooting , but the ATT'S didn't specify where . In 1979 the Ontario Fish and Game regs were changed to specifically precluded the use of handguns for hunting and the wording on the ATT'S was changed to include , At An Approved Range .

One added comment . In 1985 my club collected 5,000 individual letters asking for the return of legal handgun hunting in Ontario . The letters were collected through other clubs , at gunshows and various sporting events across northern and northwestern Ontario and were copied 3 times and forwarded via the Ontario Handgun Association with 5,000 copies going to each , the Attourney General , Soliciter General and the Minister of Natural Resources of Ontario . The government consulted with the Ontario Federation Of Anglers and Hunters , who thought it was a bad idea , and it died . I realize that it was a long time ago but that is just one of the many reasons why i hate the OFAH . I don't even want to get started on what they did to us on the gun control issue , spring bear hunting , wolf hunting or moose tag allocations and game farms .

CSSA/CILA has been pushing the issue for years. Almost got it at one point too. The problem is two fold. ATTs can be issued for "any good and sufficient reason" but the law says a restricted can only be fired on an approved range. As well, most provinces prohibit hunting with a pistol. Double whammy. Really hard to break through on this one.

It has to start witht he provinces.

If they wil remove the handgun hunting restriction, then Ottawa cannot say "You don't need a handgun cause you can't hunt iwth one, anyway."

Tony this all started in Ontario with the introducion of c-51 . They re-wrote the Fish and Game regs specifically to comply with C-51 .

from what i have seen of the OFAH it is mainly a bunch of the "good ol boys" who feel hunting should be limited to single shot bolt action rifles or break barrel shotguns. i wouldnt count on much if any help from them on this but with the membership of CSSA/CILA and a hard push from the mambers of CGN we might actully be able to take this somewhere
