I just bought a s&w 686 4.2" revolver and I was wondering if there was a semi-auto pistol that fired the 357 magnum or 38 special so I could use the same amunition.

Don't quite get this part but your 686 4.2" will fire both calibers nicely.

Now if you mean a pistol that just fires .38 spc....yes.

Smith makes lots of them for example: Model 14.

But anything that fires .357 will always take .38 special.

Smith & Wesson Model 52 .38 Special Wadcutter Semi-Automatic Target Pistol

And that's all that I am aware of.

I've shot both the Desert Eagle and a Coonan in .357. The DE is just TOO big a gun for almost any practical purpose. The Coonan is better on that aspect but it has a very deep grip frame from front to back due to the length of the cartridge. It was at the limit of my fit and I've got fairly big hands.

All in all forget it. Buy a 9mm or other gun which shoots "proper" semi auto ammo.

The smith 52 is an excellent target gun but only fires flush seated wadcutters in .38
Colt also made a national match for a while that fired .38 wadcutter as well but they are rare.

Man you should consider a mares leg or other repeater. Itd be nice to have a rifle and pistol with the same ammo
