Hi there,

I'm brand new to both the forum and shooting. I've just completed my CFSC and CRFSC courses and once I get the paperwork done I'd like to get shooting. I live in downtown Toronto though and am looking for suggestions for where I could go to shoot. I think I'd like to get a membership somewhere so I can shoot regularly (likely just a 9mm or .22). Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there anything anywhere close to the downtown core?

Look into some of these:

Burlington
Galt (Great club. They're very expensive but allow tons of freedom. They do it right in my opinion.)
Hamilton
Gormley
Waterloo
Guelph

Nearest range to "downtown" is Lakeshore Arms in Etobicoke. They only shoot Saturdays and they shoot in the old Enfield testing bunker on the land that used to be the Long Branch Arsenal. That's basically the only choice in the city, because the Toronto Revolver Club has a lot of ridiculous rules and isn't really worth a look into.

Welcome to the forums and to the obsession! :)

The Hart House and Union Station ranges have long been closed, there are no shooting ranges in the downtown core anymore. :(

Range Burlington is a multi-discipline range with many active leagues just west of Brant Street in Burlington. We have a bit of a waiting list right now (about a year) but we are still accepting new members. Click the link in my .sig block if you want more information, or drop me a PM.

The best place in Toronto for shooting handgun is Jane and Finch. There is so much gunfire going on there, nobody would notice if you popped off a few rounds doing some target practice.

On top of what's been mentioned already, there are Aurora Gun Club and Barrie Gun Club to consider.
Oh, and please never vote liberals for the Mayor ;-)
Even such a clown as Ford is better - at least he hasn't exhibited any antigun sentiments so far...

The TRC does NOT have ridiculous rules, just correct procedures to keep idiots away.
The club has been in existence since 1905 and doesn't need morons exhibiting unsafe handling/shooting to bugger things up, so there is a distinct and proven probation/training period. YES I'm a proud member of the TRC!

I live in Toronto and I go through the trouble to huff my ass 70 km's to Galt Sportsmens Club in Cambridge. That should tell you something about GTA clubs...

Galt is the only no bull#### club I have found. Open 362 days a year, 24/7. NO RANGE OFFICERS required. Indoor/Outdoor Handgun, Rifle/Shotgun/Clays, etc...

Some clubs ( some mentioned here) in the GTA are supper elitist, require all sorts of qualifications, some want you to qualify with specific calibers, only shooting when an approved RO or special member is present and all sorts of other stupid #### that shouldn't be required. Oh yea and no rapid fire, human silhouette targets.

Laugh2

That stuff is laughable. A club that doesn't allow more then x amount of shots per second or a certain type of target. Can you say fudd central?

I know exactly what you are talking about. I'm a member at Silverdale and some of the things you mentioned are in effect. Now, I still like it there but sometimes it can take the fun out of it. I'm sure it partly has to do with the CFO on their backs.

I've never heard of Galt sportsmen club before. I may have to check it out.

I heard SHARON is accepting new members. But a purchase of 1-share is required, around 3K??? plus membership. I shoot at TRC. Yes, rules are rules and as "m900mwk" suggests, these rules kept this range for years without trouble with neighbors and LEO. AURORA, AJAX, ORONO are also worth exploring.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't one of those rules that you can only shoot lead? Stupidest rule in todays age of copper plated bullets which is just as soft on a backstop as lead.

Actually new membership shares were selling for $1,500.

If I lived in Toronto (perish the thought) I'm not sure I'd shoot, there are so many pointless regulations thought up by people intent on treating other shooters - especially new shooters - like they can't be trusted, it's sick. Range Officer requirement, Safety course, probationary membership, required shoots, holster course, rapid fire restrictions, capacity restrictions - does anyone really believe that any of these are necessary? Come out to Victoria, I'll take you to 2 ranges that require NONE of the above - even from a day pass shooter, and haven't had a civilian shooting incident in over 100 years.

PS kudos to the executive of VFGPA, for acting proactively to purchase a 50 acre parcel of land adjacent to the club that had been slated for a subdivision, leadership like that maintains our freedom to shoot.

Lots of exaggeration there. You don't have a 10 round mag restriction? You can shoot IPSC without a black badge? There's no probation for guests here. Makes perfect sense to make sure new members are safe and trained before setting them loose.

All this great talk about Galt! Sounded like a place I have to join ASAP, website look great everything I'm looking for........then I read this review on a website from 3 months ago......
"I went for a visit and to check out their facilities and was thoroughly blindsided. Not only were the people vague, but they were borderline rude and snobby. The indoor gun range is somewhat permanently closed with no expected re-opening to be given at this time. The rifle range is not available to anyone unless they have been a member for more than 2 years by their estimate and the handgun range requires that you take their own handgun test. Basically a "old school clay shooting members club". I am 50 yrs old and not accustomed to being treated like a slave on a plantation.... for the honour of paying them $500-$650 a year to be treated like utter dirt."

Anybody a member from Galt here care to clarify? Is there restrictions on the rifle range for new members? Do I have to take a course to shoot handguns? Is it an old boys club? I'm not paying money to be looked down upon, racism is my biggest pet peeve in this sport.
