While shooting today I experienced my first hangfire.I heard the click of the fireing pin hitting the primer then a second or two later it fired.It's my understand that this is a fairly unusual occurance with shotshells?I was shooting a semi auto and it ejected the empty casing normally.However oddly there was a lot of residue on the outside of the casing indicating there was some back pressure.Any ideas as to why?Was the primer just enough to force the load out causing a partial blockage before the main charge went off? The round was a Federal 12 pellet 00 buck.

Could be caused by any number of things from a sift seated primer to a powder charge not to spec to the gun actually not coming into battery properly but just enough to engage

My Beretta A400 started to hang fire on me one day shooting clays. I then realized that I hadn't cleaned it in a while. Cleaned the piston and BINGO! Everything was fine. I think it was not cycling properly and was not closing the bolt fully.

It's a Rem 1100, the shell a Federal 12 pellet 00 buck. Gun just had a full tear down and cleaning. I'm fairly certain its the shell but curious as to the considerable amount of residue on the sides of the spent casing.I took a couple of shots after with different ammo,no issue.
To me it is a probable damp shell/powder charge. Only time I have had this is when I reloaded some damp/wet shells . Made for a fun day goose hunting when you never knew if it would go bang, and drop a bird, or pop and watch a shot string and wad go 20 feet.
