After doing a rigorious search, I ask which type of case is better, and why?
I have a soft case, which I rarely used, for my airgun.

By my figuring a soft case would allow the firearm to breathe more, if stored in a soft case, no?

As well, from my web searching a airline approved case for a firearm is an opaque, hard sided case, correct?

The difference is obvious.

A hard case offers much more protection, hands down.

Yes on an airplane a hard case is required. Trust me you don't want those baggage handlers handling your gun in even the best soft case on the market!

Last year riding the quad up and down the trails with my rifle in a soft case, I managed to break a scope. Didn't notice till it was too late, and missed a couple grouse because of it. Since then it is hard case only for me, at least when it comes to my scoped rifles.

The soft case is for the beater guns, I am not concerned about all that much with iron sights, etc.

"...if stored in a soft case, no?..." No. Moisture tends to get trapped in any case. Don't store firearms in a case. Soft cases, even the one you have, are good day for trips to the range and when you control how it gets handled. Mind you, they usually hold just one firearm.
"...hard sided case, correct..." Yep. The harder, the better. With good locks. In 'bagage monkeyese', the word 'fragile' means "Throw this." The best flying cases are Al.

I've got a soft case for my .22 that does all the shooting, I got it mainly cus it was dirt cheap, but it's pretty straight forward you will get much more protection with a hard case.

Depends what you are doing. If you are in care and control all the time, the soft cases are lighter for extended carrying. For transport out of your care and control, hard case is better. Do not store your firearms in a case, unless that case only contacts the firearm in a couple key areas that are extremely well thought out to prevent moisture transfer.
