Hi, yesterday I went shooting with my brand new 270 WSM Remington 700 CDL SF. I noticed that the bolt was difficult to close a first , I slowly shot 60 rounds of Winchester factory ammo and noticed that the bolt got much smoother and smoother. I carefully inspected the cases after each shoot, cleaned the bore often, and they rifle shoots extremely well.

Is a difficult to close bolt "normal" or is this a bad sign?
Alex

Not normal, but happens a fair amount. Sounds like the chamber is a bit tight, or the ammo is oversize, or a bit of both. Try another type of ammo - this will help you make a conclusion.

When you say the bolt was difficult to close at first, was it on a round or empty?

If it was empty and hard to close the front trigger guard screw may be too long and it has backed off or wore a groove in the bolt locking lug radius...

Hard to close on factory ammo occurs occasionally when a minimum chamber meets up with maximum brass.

Congrats on the new gun. Did the extractor leave any marks on the brass? I had to file the extractor on my 700 because the bolt was really hard to close and it was gouging the brass.

How do you manage to get a file in on a 700 extractor?

Is it with Factory or reload. If reload turn your die in 1/8 more turn and try it. Good luck. If it is a short chamber you may find max loads for your rifle are less than listed max loads so work up carefully.

Hi, all my fired cases were in perfect shape. I was a little afraid of firing the rifle at first but the bolt was only difficult to close not hard. I carefully checked every cartridge before firing and inspected them for any abnormal signs but everything was perfect.

Yesterday I went to a sports shop and was told that often the chamber and extractor need to be carefully cleaned using a product like a brake cleaner spray. I'm doing this Saturday and will shoot the rifle with a clean chamber.

The ammo was Winchester (good brass) not Federal, Norma or Lapua so I'm not freaking out yet ;)

Thanks for the help, considered the issue closed,
Alex
