Hi,

I need a 0.100" diameter by 0.5" long hardened steel dowel pin. This is for an original 1878 Sharps Borchardt so I can't just order a replacement part :)

A source in the lower mainland of B.C. would be preferred.

thanks very much,

Chris.

I don't know what that pin does in that gun... but .100" is gonna be an odd size short of making it as far as I know. Closest is 2.5mm(.0984") in either 12 or 14mm length.
One option if you need bang on .1000"(+/-.0002) is to buy a plug/pin gauge, and cut it to the length you need with a zip cup.

Actually, just buy a cheap set of drill bits with the small sizes. A #38 is .101" .
A #39 is 0.99" .
You could take a number 38, Chuck it tip first in a drill, a run it on some emery cloth. But it is possible a #39 might work as is. Then just cut to length. If you aren't into such things, pm me and I could make you one.

KBC does sell HSS drill blanks in wire sizes if that's close enough, I imagine it would be annealed, so kinda soft but easy to harden up if needed.

I needed a pin to replace one on a Garand op rod catch. Went to the local fastener store in town and showed the counter guy what I needed it for. He comes back with a #49 drill bit. It fit perfect. Scored the shank with a file at the correct length and snapped it off. Too easy.

Yep. Check KBC Tools, preferably in person. They stock drill and reamer blanks. I know they stock "over and under" size reamers for dowel pins, so you can get a free fit or a interference one. Worth checking out.

If that does not pan out, start by digging out any listings for Machinist Tools Suppliers, as well as the Nut and Bolt/Industrial fastener suppliers. In the latter case, you might be stuck buying a box of 100 pins, but like as not, somewhere under $20 for it. Small dowel pins are pretty cheap. Oh. Bearing supply houses, like BC Bearing, etc. Roller elements for needle bearings. Like as not, they would have something available.

Cheers

How "hard" do you need it to be, drill shanks are good steel but only the twist part is hardened (notice the scarfed up ones from just the drill chuck slipping). If you need a pin hard enough that it won't bend under a spring loaded or over-center torsion application you may have to heat treat the drill shank as they can "bend" somewhat easily without doing so.
