I'm thinking about taking my wife on a honeymoon,:bigHug: after 8 years of marriage 2 kids, 3 moves and countless "guys only" fishing trips I think it's about time:D

I'm interest in going to NZ.....But since we will be there for 2 or 3 weeks I shouldn't let some of that hunting opportunity go to waste.

I see no reason that after doing that whole consumate the marriage thing, that I couldn't slip out and wack some possums with my .17HMR for a couple of evenings. Especially since she hates post coitial snuggling:dancingbanana:

Maybe a 2 or 3 day hunt for some goats thrown in to end it off.

Has anybody hunted there or could recommend an outfitter? what kind of cost should I expect?

Well that is an absolutely fantastic idea... Hope I can help a bit:

Lived down there, and found the wife, on the South Island. First thing's first: You want to go to the South Island for hunting opportunities. Unfortunately with the recent quake, I'm really not sure where would be best. I would have recommended Canterbury, but I'll recommend Southland or Otago (these are both provinces)....

So, I would highly recommend either trying to find a guide or a full blown lodge in the Southern Alps. You also HAVE to include Thar (alternatively spelt Tahr) hunting. This is a really tough goat to hunt, and runs wild on the southern alps. They are pretty localised, so definitely find a guide.

I've not gone the guided hunt way in NZ, having hunted only with an older Maori friend, but there are a number of well known guides. I'll put out some feelers and see what I can find out for you...

Just FYI, there are no native mammals to hunt in NZ. They are all feral critters. The Government shoots traps and poisons lots of them in different areas. However you can find places (other than the numerous "hunt farms") to hunt free range ferals.

Civen, I would really appreciate that,

Not looking for a hunt farm at all, I know that New Zealand is home to only feral species, hence the awesome free range population control they allow!

If you want to go, just go. COntact Maureen at the TVDA, Thames Valley Deer Stalkers association in Paeroa. They just hosted the world english sporting clays champs and has a list of people hungry for more tourist dollars. Fantastic hospitality, and scenery that is second to none.
There are lots of guys that would take you hunting for nothing more than the promis that you would return the favour here.

Quantas had a seat sale on recently, and you can normally fly from Vancouver nonstop for about $1500 return.

IF you plan on taking your guns with you, the nz police are friendly and easy to accomodate. It was $25 and a short inspection at the airport and away you go. If you want to take advantage of our strong dollar Martin Coe from Beretta NZ has spectacular service and selection

Go to this page http://www.fishnhunt.co.nz/forum/YaBB.cgi its a forum for new zealand hunters, their a friendly bunch and you'll find someone that'll take you out for free in a quick hurry. One more thing new zealand is one of the easiest countries to get a gun into but the usa could be a pain to take one through so i'd look into that if i were you. Best of luck try and get a wallaby while your down there.

We're headed over in three weeks for a hunt. I'll let you know how it goes when we get back. Possums are definitely on our list too!
