Has anyone put a precision rifle barrel on a Mossberg action?

thinking about upgrading the barrel on my budget rifle to a precision style heavy barrel, has anyone worked with a Mossberg action or could point me in the right direction?

thanks a bunch.

Mythbusters proved you can polish a turd, but it's still a turd at the end of the day. But just about any competent gunsmith should be able to take on such a task. Flush your money as you will.

I have not looked too closely at a Mossberg but it can't possibly be any worse than a Savage.

How does your gun shoot now with the factory barrel? I am not to familiar with the Mossberg bolt guns but what little I have seen did not impress me.

That being said it should still be an okay platform to learn some basic fundamentals on.

Get some reloading equipment (if you haven't already) and do some load development.

Watch some YouTube videos and do a bedding job.

Not sure if there are any aftermarket triggers for the Mossberg but a replacement trigger is another early (and reasonably priced) step in the precision journey.

What sort of optics do you have? In my experience $500 is the minimum for decent optics for a budget rig; more if you can afford it.

All the above options will be relatively low priced or at least retain significant value over time. Then if like the feeling that comes with shrinking groups, you can upgrade to a better rifle and still use the same reloading equipment and optics.

You won't retain any value on a $1000 custom barrel.

Hope that can help you out

Savage is fine but I don't shoot well with mine because the bag I have to wear over my head when using it obscures my vision. At a recent gunshow, I was comparing the Mossberg and Savage and could really see little reason to recommend one over the other. Interestingly enough, Savage has been making the same thing for the last sixty years or more and it has only been recently that the expectations of the customer bases has sunk to a level that they refer to a Savage as being an example of quality workmanship.

alot of talk not alot of pictures of peoples groups, not saying there are not better rifles out there but they are very capable.

yes i know my standard deviation is really ####ty but my bullets were running out of steam at 500 @ 600 there were subsonic and not registering, switching to 69 gr bthp this year

Pics worth a thousand words , would you mind explaining the scoring v#s etc and left /middle shooter etc . I'm sorry I know nothing about these things , is that an official score card or off a balistics program .
Also is that the mossberg 1500 action ? I have and old S&W /howa 1500 that also shoots as good as most stock rifles (including my Sakos,rem700s,tikkas)

This is a group while load developing my 1982 S&W( same as mossberg 1500) 7rem mag hunting rifle (factory sporter barrel )at 100 yds

I would love to rebuild my old S&W , bought it in 1982 for $320, it's been flipped on a quad , drowned in a river tumbled down BIG hill and bounced in a quad scabbard for easily over 2-3000 Kms . But I broke the stock and accura glassed the stock solid to the barrel .
Still shoots pretty good for an old girl / old turd / ##*#ty action
PS - lost count of the game my old turd has taken and after a lot of use and trauma the group above was from last spring trying out 140 gr vld hunting bullet for accuracy and at 500 -700 (as far s I've tried) it can do MOA as well ,and I'm not a practiced long distance shooter but the scope I put on this was 4xs the value of the rifle

So I think you could do what you want with your mossberg

its a screen shot of the score card for our clubs electronic target system, the v's are 1/2 moa based on range so 300 v is 1.5, 5 ring is 1 moa 300 yards its 3 inches and so on with consecutive rings 4,3,2,1,0 or non score so your total is added with v's being placed in the decimal place out of a possible 50.10v,

the middle left right shooter just represents your order in the firing line, shooters in groups fine in order on the same target and the computer keeps track of the shots using 3 microphone place on the target frame to triangulate the shot relative to the center of the target

its a stock Mossberg MVP varmint in .556
