Has Goex gone to the cost of gold?

Ever since Covid we have lived in a scalpers market based purely on greed.I would not be able to own half the stuff I have now if I were to buy it today. When you see a gun you bought years ago for $2000 now go upwards of 6 grand you just shake your head and thank god you were able to buy it back then

Nations all around the world are devaluing their currencies.

The US dollar has been falling for years, and Canada's dollar is in lock step.

Black powder production at the current time isn't at the top of manufacturer's list of things to do, just like Alliant powders.

Devalued dollars buy less, but they still claim inflation is at 2.4%

$100/lb of powder, no matter what type, is the new norm.

I had to chuckle at the comment about "sitting on a bunch of money"

Want to know what your money buys?

Look at the one "constant," Gold.

Gold maintains its "value" through "most" situations when it comes to staples.

One ounce of gold will buy just as much bread today as it did when it was $us25/oz, but it takes $us4200 to buy an ounce of gold.

So when gold was $25/oz, you could have bought 42 pounds of black powder, and now you can still buy 42 pounds of black powder with an ounce of gold.

We are definitely dealing with people hoarding BP, like everything else in our hobby. There's no way the apparent demand that has seen shelves emptied is genuine—I belong to two large clubs and have yet to see another BP shooter on either range. I shoot a variety of muzzleloaders, Snider, Martini, etc., etc., and one pound goes a long way. I won't keep more than a couple or three pounds around at any time for obvious reasons. I do hope Goex comes back as nothing else I've tried matched its accuracy in a wide variety of rifles and muskets. I've had phenomenal results with Snider and Martini, in particular.

Well said.

I have a supply of Goex as I knew it was in short supply during Covid. I bought anything that came up on GP. Most was 3 f which I picked up for $30-$35 per lb. As many black powder guns as I have it doesn’t take long to go through a pound of powder.
Swiss powder is currently available here for $50 per lb. I bought 8 lbs that once my Goex runs out I’ll be using. This is the third shortage I have been through in my life. I ran out during the first one and I learned to stock up so I can continue to shoot when components aren’t available. If that’s hoarding so be it. I’ll continue shooting and not have to worry after my can goes empty. Shortage isn’t over yet. Still a lot of powders aren’t available or hard to find. Buy ahead and be prepared for a shortage.

I would imagine Goex’s insurance went up substantially after the first explosion , then one more, probably lucky if they can get insurance at any price. And if the insurance even covered the cost of a rebuild . Many people who have never run a business don’t realize all the extra costs in the overhead. Utilities, insurance , commercial property taxes, state-county-municipal permits. They all add up , and I am sure they are not doing this for the fun of it, they are in it to make a profit and if it is not enough to make it worth while , might as well go get a job doing something else. And really, how much powder do you go through in a year?

BP might go a long way for you, which is fine, but I know folks going through a pound per week.

You can't justify another's needs by your own.

It became a "given" over 40 years ago that supplies of ammunition and reloading materials were whims of markets, supply, and demand.

For some reason, many folks just can't get their heads around supply/demand ratios and principles.

The materials used for BP are in demand all over the world, distribution costs are through the roof, and regulatory costs are also high.

Very few stores want to go to the expense of keeping it in stock. It's much more volatile than smokeless powder and needs better conditions for storage.

If I were selling the stuff, I most certainly wouldn't be keeping large quantities on hand.

If you're able to purchase gold or silver. I still have a pendant that I bought my ex-gf back in 1988 paid no more than $50 for it today I can sell it for $375. Thank God she threw it back at me LOL.

true inflation is most likely in the double digits.

and here I thought $50/lb was outrageous
Thankfully I’m set in that department.
Back in 2012 I paid $17/lb from a dealer near Niagara. It made the 3.5hr drive from Barrie worth it.
$50 lbs is outrageous! That's kinda my point. If a pound of GOEX costs $10 to make and sell with a 100% profit point, and the other $40 is the red tape tax in shipping, insurances, etc. etc., then okay...but at $100 a lbs, I just don't understand?

I like an eggs and bacon breakfast every now and again. The cost of the potato hash brown cakes (excellent fried in bacon grease) has gone through the roof! It's not that me and the misses are strapped for cash, as much as "I'm not paying that much, for that! What's a bag of potatoes cost?" $4 for a large bag is that answer, and I now make my own home fries, and their excellent. I'll never go back. Perhaps it's time to charcoal some willow and make my own powder? How hard can it be, they were making it in the 13th century in Europe, long before that in China.

I'm just not paying $100 for a pound of black powder. Simple as that.

If you think they are making too much money, start your own company. See how much capital you would need just for start up costs. I worked at a car dealership for decades, the cost just to open the doors each month would floor you. Try getting a “ standard garage automobile policy” , the insurance company dictates every little thing you are going to do, give them any lip and you won’t be operating. Just imagine if the insurance industry decided not to cover companies that made powder, primers, ammo. We would be done shooting.

For $100 a pound, I'd be happy to supply you with several pounds. :ROFLMAO:

Then you won't be shooting your smoke poles. 🤷‍♂️

You all made me go and look at my powder stash.

I have ca. 9lbs of 2F and 3F Goex. Most of which would have been purchased pre-2006 for maybe $15 a pound. :p

We haven't been shooting BP much lately so that will last for the foreseeable future. Also got a good stock of balls, patches and caps to last us a long time.
