I was out hunting moose back in 85 or so and I was nearly run over by a stampeding moose.
After I composed myself I noticed that the moose was actually being chased down by a big frikkin' dog.
Since I was right in the path of where the moose went, the mutt was right running down the path toward me...growling like he was gonna eat me.
I made some noise and stepped off the trail, but he kept running straight me still growling.
I had the safety off and I waited till he was about 20 feet from me, and I shot him right in the head. I looked for a collar but found nothing but a very dead, smelly, skinny dog.
I waited around for about 2 hours to see if anyone showed up to claim the dog, but there was nothing but the silence of the bush broken up by distant gunshots. It was getting close to where I couldn't see through the open sights of my No5 .303, so I started back to camp. On the way back I rested on an old pile of logs about 2 miles from camp,I heard some more crashing in the bush and was hoping not to repeat the performance of earlier. I stayed quiet and up over the small rise a big bull stood and stared me down, I released the safety and hit him with a 215 grain CIL, he made a circle and stood there. I hit him again on the opposite side and he fell with a sound of all the air coming out of him, he kicked a bit and after a few minutes all was still.
I had nearly been run down by a moose and possibly chewed on by a big motherf**kin' dog all in the space of a few short hours. To top it all off ,I got a nice moose at the end of the day and a hell of a story. Moose heart and onions and a hot cup of coffee was all I remembered before collapsing in my bunk.....

not hunting but hiking through a small poplar sapling "forest" we heard crashing and we could see the tops of trees as they were moved/pushed aside or just knocked over lo and behold a bull moose did come right past us at fairly good clip (i'm not sure if he even saw us)
i have shot a dog chasing deer near the same spot but it was years later

Near Vancouver, I once came upon tree wild dogs that had bedded down on a bushy trail. I ended the dogs angry stand off by sinding a 240 grain, .44 magnum bullet through the full length of one of them.....

Wasn't hunting, but doing a field investigation (did a stint with OMNR research branch for a few years) and came across a great dane and a yorkie cross of some kind. No gun, just my hunting knife on my belt. This pair started to work me in a circle, and it was the only time I felt like me and my knife were going to have to duke it out with some animal for survival. Little bastard was attempting to hamstring while big boy was diverting me around and pushing in. This was a well practiced routine with these two. When it was apparent I wasn't going to be that easy, they broke off and headed home. They belonged to an adjacent farm and were simply allowed to free-range. Had a chat with the owner once I got back to the truck and we "discussed" the concept of harassment of wildlife, especially when it was me... ;)

An acquaintance of mine likes to do astrophotography up north well away from human activity to get very dark skies. On more than one occasion he's been woken up in his sleeping bag and what's left of his tent to play kissy-face with a black bear ... :)

This is the kind of stuff that happens when rectal orifi decide they don't want Fido anymore and just leave him at the side of the road. There are packs of "pet" dogs running around too. The same rectal orifi let Fido run loose. Dogs that run deer get shot regularly in most places.
It's hard to imagine a Yorkie, cross or otherwise, teaming up with a Great Dane. Mind you, a lot of little dogs think they're Dobermans. Any idea which one was the #####?

I think the idea was it was going to be me....;) I don't recall if I thought about gender, more about whose throat was going to get slit first. I'd be guessing the dane. The ankle biter seemed to have the agenda. (most likely both were males)
It was a pretty weird scenario - I felt like I'd fallen into a Monty Python skit.

Not with a dog... But we've shot cats while out hunting. None of them have ever had a collar on. Friggen feral cats are really hard on the songbird and small game numbers...

Cheers
Jay
P.S. I'm a dog lover and I would have shot that dog to! The only time you'd have to be careful is if there was a season that your allowed to use dogs on big game. Ontario has a season for this and I have had some fantastic hunts behind hounds for big game!

at a uncles place (Silvan Lake AB) 7 curs were in with his cattle we got 3 and party line call to neighbors got the rest. Let your dogs run and it will happen. Some were strays or abanded otheres were healthy farm dog . AJ
