Has your scope actually lost zero? Completely failed? Gas released?

What scope has failed you COMPLETELY?

I don't mean lost an inch or two from being banged around. I mean actually failed and/or broke? I read the threads all the time about scopes "breaking" and hear some terrible reviews.

" I will never buy ######xx scopes again!"

What scopes have you personally had that actually have failed through regular use?

Lots of options these days. It would nice to get some people, new to the game, informed.
I am putting what I see as the most popular in regular use in here.
Not many people are purchasing $1500+ scopes. So I will stick to the basic $200-$1000 range.

Any details, please let us know!

I had a Vortex crossfire 6-24x50 fail. It wouldn't hold zero and the adjustments stopped working.

I have a tough time trusting optics that are less then $1000 these days. (even though I just bought a bushy 10x40 fixed)

Bought a "Leapers" 1.5 - 9 x 42 from a gent selling his g'fathers stuff. New, never mounted and certainly looked like it hadn't been. Mounted it on the 30 06 that I bought from the same guy. While sighting in, raise the gun for the seventh shot and the sight picture was wrong. It took me a short moment to realize there was no reticle. The damn thing had fallen right out of the mount. Took it apart to figure how to fix it and some dummy (that would be "me") touched the cross hairs with a finger. Now really broken and I doubt a replacement reticle can be purchased.

I had a 3200 that died on me.

6 rounds of 7RM out of a Lead Sled and it wouldn't hold poa any more.

Sent it in and got one of the new Elite series in exchange.

Lesson learned.

I have since placed a 2 inch block of high density foam in the rear cradle of the Lead Sled solving the cause of the issue.

There's a few brands missing from that poll. Quite popular ones too.

Yeah I realize that. There are many common ones found, mainly for hunters and target. I know there were too many to list, so I threw the "other" in there. Was hoping you guys would just write in the comments any others.
As a fairly new scope buyer, the more common ones are for sale many places.
Not sure if I will (or many other family men) ever be able to afford a Nightforce! Although I would be interested to hear if one of those failed...

Kind of a dumb poll.

Bushnell runs the gambit from $50 to $4000
same with vortex.

You can only compare scopes in the same price range and class.

I have had plenty of cheap scopes fail.

NCstar, tasco, cheap bushnell scopes, cheap any scope really, will all likely fail before a high end bushnell or vortex will.

I have also seen a number of S&B PMII scopes fail - does this mean they are crap?

Yeah Daver, thanks for the critiques. Most polls on this forum are kind of dumb... but they are usually a bit amusing or maybe a bit helpful to newer shooters.

The thing is, I would venture to guess that the majority of Canadian gun owners buy scopes for $1000 or less. Especially newer gun owners or annual hunters.

Was hoping we would compare the under $1000 scopes.

Nobody is saying they are crap for failing, but I would like to check some trends out.

And yes, if I had "seen a number" of the same scope fail, I would not buy that scope.

I am not trying to be an Jerk, Just pointing out that lumping a whole brand into someone's experience with a $125 bushnell is not fair to the company, or to a new shooter trying to decide on an optic in their price range.

It is interesting to see the trends, but the data is not really complete.

Totally understand.

Still curious as I own several scopes under $1000. Non have failed me yet. So I am trying to gather some intel here from you guys that get to shoot and spend much more than I.

.......And the red head/blond/brunette poll probably has been done before :dancingbanana:

Bought a "Redhead" scope for my .22 and it worked like a charm. Inexpensive, but it never failed me. So, when I was looking for a scope for my 20 ga. shotgun I bought the Redhead shotgun scope when it was on special. First shot and the internals fell apart. I've read lots of threads on bad optics (ie: Barska, Leapers, AIM, Redhead, etc.). Though it makes no sense to mount a $1000. scope on a $150. beater or truck gun, by the same token what's a missed deer or moose or whatever worth to you? You can buy good reliable optics with a good warranty for $200.+. Like anything else, you get what you pay for.

I had an M305 shake two lenses loose and release the gas in an expensive Bushnell after 150 rounds.

The discount display model Leupold I bought from a site sponsor is holding up awesome after.... sorry, I lost count.

A friend of mine bought a tasco on sale for about 30 buck a few years ago, he put it on his Sako TRGS 338 Lapua just to see what would happen. About shot five the cross hairs disappeared and it developed a rattle.

Other. I had 2 HiLux CMR 1-4, fail.
The o-ring in the ocular lens came out, covering the lens from 12 o'clock to 3 o'clock. It happened on both scopes in almost the same pattern. The first scope lasted 29 days. The second was a replacement, not a repair, it lasted about 6 months iirc.

Two Elites with the Lead Sled and a VarX II that I bought had the windage
stripped around center.
All three were warranty.
The Leupold was replaced with a current model.
