For those of you driving an SUV that you'd rather not mess up with a big game carcass, how do you transport your game?

This is the first year in the last 10 that I won't have a pickup with a canopy. I could trade the Explorer for a pickup I guess, but I'll be doing a lot of road trips over the next 6 months or so, and she's a nice ride and good on fuel.

I'm thinking a cargo box on the roof rack would take a quartered deer easily, while keeping the meat clean. I've seen those hitch-mounted baskets, but I think even 5 minutes on a gravel road would have your deer covered in dust and dirt, unless it were sealed in garbage bags?

I always rolled my deer in a tarp in the back after they're registered.
They would easily fit in a Thule roof rack tho.

I had several SUV's and even one minivan (yeah, yeah...had 3 young kids at the time :p ) before buying a full size truck and always went with putting them in the back.
A couple tarps and some heavy mil plastic to protect the interior worked fine.

I Just use a good heavy tarp. Get one big enough so you can create a dam all the way around the carcass to prevent blood from getting on the carpet.

Ive brought many deer home in my old mini van years ago, I would lay down some cardboard in the back and never had a mess to deal with.

4 big tuppaware storage totes, no lids as you want lots of air flow, put them in the back with a blanket over the top to keep out dirt and bugs

I used a hard plastic kiddie pool. Took up the whole back of my wife's Pilot, and didn't let any blood or anything out. I did this many times while my truck was in the shop.

I used 6 mil plastic and taped up to the sides of the vehicle , then a large tarp that would go high on the sides and up the front seats. Using this method I once brought back 6 deer in a Cherokee with no messes but lots of traction. :)

get a body bag.friend of mine uses them for his suv .he got a few of them BodyBagStore.com - Home - Wholesale Body Bags Supplier ...

bodybagstore.com

Seems like a good idea but what you want is airflow around the meat to keep it cool. Body bags make great bags in the boat or on a sled being pulled by a snowmobile, but not great for raw meat storage.

When I've hunted with a car or SUV I "Mafia-Proof" the trunk with 10 mil poly from Home Depot or another hardware store. It's tough enough that it won't tear (tougher than a poly tarp) and you can wash it and reuse it of you want.
