... how a pilot gained access to the cockpit of a P-38? You can't just step up on the trailing edge of the wing.
Last night I watched "A Guy Named Joe", a film made in 1943 starring Spencer Tracy and Irene Dunne. The pilot grabs a handle at the rear of the cockpit pod, pulls it and that pops down a foot step. Once he's on the wing, he closes the hand grab, which retracts the step. Could also be retracted by a ground crewman. Looks pretty hokey, but it obviously works.
