I have owned a few 700s but had a problem with only one, a Varmint in .223Rem. It would extract but occasionally would only partially pull the case from the chamber.

It was repaired promptly while I waited (WR Long Gunsmithing) & at no cost to me.

This is the only problem I have ever encountered with a Remington 700 rifle & would not cause me to avoid purchasing more rifles this manufacturer.

I suppose I should detail my experience too, I've had give or take 20 M700's, currently have a couple, and never a problem for me. I ask becuase I'm considering taking one abroad, and it's a choice between an M700 and a Model 70 in the safe, I prefer the M700 though I just can't afford to have a failure. I've never replaced an M700 extractor, is it a 'field' capable job if I bring a spare and modest tools?

How new is the rifle? Is the extractor rivetted in, or the newer snap in type? If its the latter, installation isn't difficult.

Pick up a spare extractor, then. I've found them easier to remove/install if the ejector is removed first. That requires a little punch for the ejector pin, and a small hammer.

Out of the dozens of 700s I've had, there's never been a single problem with the extractor, even the late model production 700s! None of my hunting buddies have either.

I had a tight case that the extractor tore the rim but failed to extract, I guess the extractor did it's job in a way because it didn't brake but I felt it was too small at the time and wished I had a claw extractor for a better grip.
