How many people here have killed a bear with a shotgun in self defence?

How many bears have killed people in self-defense? ;)
Today any Grizzly is a whole lot rarer and precious than the swarms of "Nature-Challenge" techno-morons that invade his domain and threaten his way of life.
How many bears have been killed because of moronic tree-huggers insisting on getting too close to "Teddy"?
PP.

Killed lots of bears, killed a few problem bears that were a little too comfy with humans, starting to engage in territorial (read: aggresive) behaviour. Been stalked by juevenille bears....

I have never had to stop a full out attack by a bear.:)

Grixxly bear and black bear populations are rising every year in BC.

Killed lots of bears but only one that you can say was in self defense. It was legally tagged however. What does this have to do with shotguns?

The reason I ask in all seriousness is that so often folks here are asking what is the best kind of shotgun for self defence, frequently also asking the kind of loads required to stop a bear.

I too have shot lots of of bears, but have never come close to feeling threatened by one.

Really, I wonder how serious a threat bears are.

One of my neighbours got a PAL and then bought a 410.

He had once had his tent knocked down on him by a bear in a campsite.

I asked him what he wanted to make the next bear mad for.

But along with many of us here, I don't usually go into bear country without some kind of backup.

Here on Vancouver Island I have had Bears stalk me..in spite of the fact I was target shooting with a Enfield at the time...they got about 100 yards away from me, and were intent on getting closer before I buggered off.

I have also had Black bears charge the truck while out on back logging roads.

Thing is bears are REALLY GOOD at being predators, so your survival chances are pretty low if it comes down to human vs bear.

My shotgun is with me always when I'm in the woods.

Black bear attacks are getting more and more common, also consider there could very well be more attacks...but how would you know as one would simply be bear poo.

Play safe, be prepared. :D

great topic, something fresh and new!

I once was followed by a black bear, but got to the truck where the gun was before anything could happen. Bear never appeared.

it was a model 94 30-30 btw ;)

A trapper I know in Timmins was checking his line and saw a bear eating a trapped beaver. He went back to the truck to get his 303 and return to where the bear was. The bear attacked him on his way back and he shot the bear about ten feet away. The bear had a broken leg and in poor condition. This probably why the bear attacked and probably why he never got to the shooter before he was shot. This trapper spent all his life in the woods and after this incident he had a renewed respect for being in the woods.
