Hello, All,

Regarding being an ultimate newbie, as the title says, I've not yet even fired a gun.

I've always been interested in marksmanship and archery and am finally giving myself a much needed kick to get active in shooting sports. I've already found a lot of great info on here. If anyone would have any suggestions on whether it is better to simply read the safety manual material and take the exams or get personal instruction, this would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Lady Ex

welcome!!

how about you post some pics of yourself, and maybe we can suggest a perfect gun to start with ;)

Welcome! Have you ever handled a firearm? If not then taking the course is a good idea. All the material is in the books but it's nice to be able to ask a instructor any questions you might have if you were to just study the books. As for the exams, the written's for both are by no means hard! It's the practical's you might struggle with if you have never handled diferrent actions of firearms.

Well, for starters, you've come to a good place.

You can ask lots of questions here........and get many different answers.

But you can pick and choose what makes the most sense to you.

Reading safety and instruction manuals is good, but getting actual hands on experience with a competent instructor is always the best way to go.

Depending on where you live, I'm sure there are plenty of local people on this site, that would be glad to meet you at a nearby range and let them shoot some of their toys.:)

There are several people on this site willing to act as mentors to newbies like yourself. If you look under the Newbie FAQ section you'll find reams of them willing to respond to private messages.
This is probably you're best bet other than someplace like The Shooting Edge or Target Sports where anyone can walk in off the street and try shooting something. Better to get a quick taste and be sure whether you want to invest the time and money required to get your license, etc.

Welcome to CGN! Even though personal instruction isn't necessary to pass the PAL and RPAL exams, the personal instruction is better IMO. I read the books, watched the videos on the CFC website and practiced on www.gunexams.com and passed both exams with scores in the 90's. The course will allow you to meet others and share information. I received a lot of hands-on training when I joined a club (a must if you want to shoot handguns)Good luck! Target shooting is a great sport!

Welcome,Queen of pain.

Good to see the ladies handling and shooting guns.

As long as you play safe, it's OK by me.

In some way's it's hot.

Girls in charge sort of thing, I'm not exactly sure bout that one?

Anyways, if you want to be the true Queen of pain, try shooting a 12 gauge shotgun with 1-1\4 oz slugs.:D

Come back here and tell us about the bruised shoulder and sore neck from the recoil.

Hi Everyone;

Sorry for the delayed response. Thank you all for your kind messages and encouragement.

Pazzo, think I will take a pass on posting pics for now but I am all for girls with guns :)

Nine, re the avatar, actually, that is a detail one of my original artworks, you can see the whole thing at: http://jerusha.cgsociety.org/gallery/371150/
Thank you for the compliment of thinking it was from Conan, though, I am honoured!

Droid1963, re Queen of Pain name, more innocent than it sounds - taken and customized from "King of Pain" by The Police.

Proonur, thanks for the suggestions about Shooting Edge and Target sports - I'll look these up online.

Thanks again for the info and the warm welcome.

Best wishes,
Lady Ex

Hi Promac, thanks, this is great info. I've bookmarked the site and am definitely interested in joining a handgun club.
