Am I still able to purchase a restricted firearm? I am in AB, if that makes a difference. I haven't gotten around to becoming a member of a gun range thats in close distance, and my previous membership to a range about an hour and a half away expired.
I've heard a range membership isnt required, but makes dealing with the CFO much easier when buying a restricted. Can anyone enlighten me if this is true or not?
There is an indoor range fairly close to me, but I don't want to be a member, I just go there every couple months to shoot my SA revolver, which is a whole lot cheaper than paying for a yearly membership.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
 
I'm in Ontario. I got my restricted n ordered a 1911 got a email a few days later from seller saying the transfer was complete will be shipping soon.
I've read elsewhere that u dont need membership to possess. Just to discharge. Lol which is complete donkey nuts but. Meh

My question would be are u albe to get a 5 year Att to take the gun to that pay per visit range with out a membership. Or do u have to get temps everytime
 
My understanding is Ontario won't confiscate the guns if the range membership expires, but will revoke the ATT. In theory, some clubs offer one-day memberships and you could get a short-term ATT to any such club.

The Ontario CFO, however, will not authorize a new purchase unless you have an active range membership or have filed as a collector.
 
In Ontario...just say your planning to join one soon...always worked for me when I was not a current member at any gun club(s)
 
You can purchase a restricted without club membership, seller(store) will apply for temp att for you, you may need to say which club you intend to join, I'm in Ontario
 
Wholesale sports in Saskatoon has a club that the take memberships for if you don't have any club you were planning on, just so that there is little hassle with the CFOs. I've had to send a scan of my membership card in to get an ATT, but I'm also listed as a target shooter. The memberships at my club are $40 and I don't think you have to be a member of a local club to get an ATT, just a club in your province as the ATT will list transport to any club in your province.

if you want a long term ATT then you need to get a range membership in order for the Alberta CFO to approve the transfer of your new gun

now it depends where you are in Alberta but here in Calgary it is a very simple thing to get an Associate membership at either of the shooting ranges here in town but the one i would recommend is the
Calgary shooting Center
a yearly associate membership is $60 and then you pay each time you visit the range
it is what i have and works very well for me
i faxed the CFO my membership and PAL they approved the transfer of my guns and sent the registrations by mail and emailed me my LATT and i was done with no problems at all
my LATT is expires at the same time as my PAL

it is a simple and painless process here in Alberta
 
Ive been curious about this one. My local range takes about a year to approve a new member. I would like to buy a pistol while I am waiting just so that I have it. Suggestions? I am in Ontario
 
At least u got one answer from Alberta. Things differ from province to province. As mentioned above, you can get the associate memberships which meet the minimum requirement but have no real benefits at the club. You still pay as you play. The Shooting Edge offers the associate membership for $50 but u need to stop and think about it. As a new shooter I can pretty much guarantee you will be shooting more than 2x/month. So for you to buy a day pass every time you shoot will in fact exceed the yearly membership fee cost. If funds are presently scarce then the Associate membership is the way to go but keep in mind they will also upgrade you from an associate to a full membership, and apply the associate membership against it. Pretty good deal.

2 of my friends were recent restricted licensee's. They couldn't figure out why it was taking so long to get their ATT's. I kept telling them as soon as you want to buy your restricted firearm, join the range. It makes everything easier, cuz they won't issue unless you are a member. It's not illegal to own restricted, but they will be thinking why does he have a restricted firearm if he doesn't belong to a range?
 
I missed renewing my club membership, unlucky for me my fac was also due for renewal. They would not renew my fac if I was not an active member of a club. Took a little scrambling to get my renewal.
 
My last transfer got held up because my range membership was not on file when my LTATT expired.I had to refax info on memberships and then ATT and transfer were completed in about 2 days.I am also in Alberta
 
In BC, if you don't renew your annual range membership does your LTATT get revoked? So you wouldn't be able to even use the range on a drop in basis unless you get temporary ATT's each time?

This just happened to me. I was able to buy restricteds without a current gun club membership, but for my PAL renewal it was required. I got a letter in the mail from the CFO of Alberta saying I had to declare the purpose of ownership for my restricted firearms before my PAL would be renewed. Failure to do so would result in me having to legally dispose of my restricted firearms. I also had to be an active club or range member prior to getting an ATT issued to me.

Challenge. I was able to buy a restricted without belonging to any club in Ontario as recent as 6 months ago

As long as you tell the person selling you the restricted that you will be joining a club, they will sell it to you. This is how I got my first handgun. I joined the range shortly thereafter
