Hello guys

I have a redding press, hornady quick change bushings, redding deluxe die set (7mm rem mag #84136)

I'm trying to seat Hornady 175gr round nose bullets

When I turn down my seating die to contact the shell, and then try to install the seating stem onto my dummy round ( c.o.a.l 3.28" ) the stem makes contact with the bullet before the threads make contact with the die. What's wrong?

Stem has "7" stamped on the top
My die has "7mm rem mag ST 20" stamped on the side

Thanks for your help

The easiest way is to put a empty case in the shell-holder on the press and raise the ram as high as it will go. Back out the seating stem on your die as far as it will go. Now take the die and start screwing into your press carefully until you feel the crimping portion of the die contact the neck of the raised case. Now back out the die one full turn and set you lock ring. Now screw down the seating stem until you get the OAL you want.

Sounds like the round nose is too wide for your seating stem. If you have a .30 cal or larger seater you can try that. Take the seater out of the die and see if the bullet will enter the hole.

You need a different seating plug for the 175gr round nose bullets. Personally, I never saw any reason for a round nose bullet in the 7mmremmag, you are taking a modern high velocity cartridge, and handicapping it with a low muzzle velocity, and a terrible B.C.

Using round nose for improved hydrostatic shock (or hoping)

You do realize that hydrostatic shock is not what kills? If you want the most energy transfer, try a rapidly expanding bullet like the Accubond. It expands more rapidly than a round nose, and holds together quite well. And at longer distances, it will have more remaining velocity to initiate expansion.
