I have a T/C contender carbine that I just rechambered to 375JDJ I started looking for .375" bullets that would expand at the longer max 300 yard range capabilities of this round.

The problem is that at 300 yards a Hornady 225gr Spitzer will only be doing appr 1600fps and I haven't found a bullet that expands below 1800fps except for the Hawk .025" jacketed 235gr RT Hawk bullets.

Does anyone here have any experiences or thoughts on Hawk bullets?

I've used Hawk bullets in the 348 Win and 404 Jeffery.
They work well in both guns and are available in different jacket thickness.
My Brother in the Yukon turned me on to them because he's used them with excellent results on several different animals.
Excellent people to deal with and they ship quickly....give them a call, they don't seem to mind splitting orders to give a customer different weights in the same bullet. When I first ordered for my Jeffery they sent me 300, 350, and 400 gr., and I was impressed because all weights shot well.

Yes they ship to Canada

I talked to the owner a couple of weeks ago about some 180gr. .277 and he said they ship to Canada as long as the order is under $500US. If it's more they break it up.

Did they ship across the border without a problem?

Yes and no, the only .375" cast bullets I have found are heavier 260gr + bullets with low BC's.

I like wide meplats on my cast bullets which does not result in the high BC's I'm looking for, I do not want to deal with rainbow trajectories if I can come up with something better.

Example the Hornady 220gr FP has a BC of 217 which results in appr 3" high @ 100 yards 4" low @ 200 and 20" + low at 300 the 225gr Hornady SP has a BC of 320 = 2" high @ 100 2" low @ 200 and 15" low @ 300 yards.

Yes it is only 5" difference at 300 yards but that could be enough for a miss on my part.

Now anything within 200 yards casts would be deadly and something that I would consider.

I just picked up few boxes of hawk bullets to feed my 1895G. I went with their .458, 400 grain, flat nose, with a .035 thick jacket.

I had emailed hawk and they got back to me quickly, (good service). I wanted a bullet that would open up on deer size game yet hold together and penetrate well on bigger stuff (elk, bear, moose, etc). The .035 jacket is what they recomened, they said it was a rather popular choice in Alaska and with some guides up there aswell.

I''ve got some test rounds loaded up using H322 and when I get some time to go to the range we'll see how they do.

Expansion wise they will do what you want admirably. In our tests they retain 97-98% of their weight, and get around 220% expansion, but we shoot them at just over 2000fps(mv).
I'd suggest calling hawk, and tell them what you're looking for, ie: muzzle velocity/range/game hunted, and they'll tell you what you need.
You may? need a thicker jacket than you're thinking?

For better or for worse I already have the 400 grain bullets with the .035 jacket. Thats what Hawk said would be a good all round NA game bullet. No doubt A .040 or thicker jacket would penetrate better but I still wanted some expansion on smaller, deer/black bear size of game. I'm going for 1800-1900fps, whatever is most accurate. Their first test will be a spring bear next year.

What jacket thickness did you test? And in what media, distance, etc.? Any reports on game?

Thanks for your time.

I've read the T Bartell/Hawk story before so am aware of his issue for now I have settled on the amazingly accurate 260gr Nosler Accubonds @ 2300fps in my 375JDJ due to their high BC of .477 they are still doing 1800fps @ 300 yards and will reliably expand slower than that.

I have an older Vari X 111 2.5-8X36mm scope that I had Tony @ Korth Group install a B&C reticle in on this combo now I am sighted in with the 260gr bullets 1" high @ 100 yards using the main cross hair, 1" high @ 200 yards using the first B&C line down and perfectly dead on @ 300 yards using the second B&C reticle line down.

I shot a 6' black bear this spring at about 90 yards with the T/C Contender carbine/load combo it hit the ground before I was out of recoil it did move a bit so I planted another one into it for good luck.

So as of now I have decided to only use the 260gr Accubonds for hunting...

I did trade for another 375RUM earlier this year from a missionary that spent the last 4 years in Africa it came with 200 235gr & 100 270gr .375" Claw bonded bullets that he bought while he was there.

Seabass I would appreciate it if you can keep us posted on the performance of those Hawk bullets.

Wasn't meaning you seabass, was thinking of the original poster shooting long range(I assume pretty high mv) with the .025 jacket. That's why I suggested he ask hawk for a recomendation.

1899 please explain?

I'd rather he post, or you pm him, because it was some time ago and I don't remember the exact details. There was a kaboom and he nearly lost an eye.

short version. Secondary explosion effect, bullet stopped in barrel, gases went backwards. Hawk bullet may or may not of been the problem, but Ive read of a number of guns being blown up when shooting Hawks

google S.E.E. if you want more info
