Hi,

I just got my field guage from gairlochian (thanks... it's excelent)... and there is good news for my No4Mk1... head space is good...

Then I got thinking... why don't I check my Ross Mk III...

How do I check the head space on a straight pull bolt???

I have never owned a Ross before, but I imagine you could drop the gage into the chamber and push the bolt to see if it will lock up with the gage in the chamber or not.

I've done this recently. Yes, it works on a Ross too. Just look at the bolt and head as you push it forward into lockup without the gauge. Then insert the Field gauge (so it's under the extractor just like a shell) and as you push it forward the same way, you will be able to visually confirm that the bolt didn't go as far forward or rotate quite as far as it did. Play with it for a bit, but every Ross I checked with the Gairlochian gauge passed no problem.

BTW, on the Enfield, you know you don't force it right? Just use two fingers and stop when resistance is encountered, done. Compare the feel with and without the gauge, light touch on the bolt handle.

The Ross locking lugs are cut on a helix, the bolt continues to move foreward as it rotates to lock. If the bolt does not turn all the way on a Field gauge it would suggest that the headspace is less than that.
There is also a procedure described in "The Ross Rifle Story".

Hi,

Thanks for the info... I tried... and it looks like the bolt does not go as far as when there is no gauge in... but the action will still fire...

Is that right?

Yes, it's perfect.

The Ross will fire in any bolt position, even with it back an inch or so. That's one way to close the bolt. You have confirmed good headspace.
