Hi all, About a year ago I received a whole bunch of stuff from my late grandfathers 'room' Among the stuff was a winchester p14 receiver, mag, trigger, and bolt, and also I found a savage? (US marked) barrel. The barrel screws right on nicely. The receiver has what looks like british proof marks, along with a star in a circle stamp and also MC5. And of course the winchester serial #..... What do I need to do to put this barrel on? where do I measure? What do I need to do? (I have access to machines if need be) Thanks all....

Barrel installation requires the use of a properly fitting action wrench and barrel vise.

After the barrel has been installed to vertical index, proper headspace must be verified with a set of headspace gauges.

You may be further ahead to find a gunsmith with the proper tools and gauges to do the job.

This is pretty much the answer to "what do I need" - buy or make a proper fitting action wrench for that receiver, and a barrel vice for that barrel profile so that you can grab the barrel and action and turn them together without marking or twisting either. I have a selection of actions that were removed by putting a bar through the mag well and barrels that were pulled with a pipe wrench - DON'T DO THAT!! - all are twisted, marred and ruined. I believe the Pattern 1914 Enfield receiver will accept an internal action wrench, as well. Most military actions and barrels were made with an indexing mark on the bottom - tighten action and barrel together until those marks line up. That puts the iron sight bases / divots at Top Dead Centre, and 99% of the time on milsurps, that also sets the headspace within tolerance. Once there, then check the chamber / bolt headspace with appropriate headspace gauges for that cartridge. Always nice to check the bolt lugs contact in the receiver before screwing on the barrel.

The P14 is 303 British. If the barrel is US marked it's probably .30-06.P14 bolt wouldn't work with .30-06.I doubt if .30-06 will feed out of an unmodified P14 action.
