Hey All:

Stupid noob question. I recently picked up a Colt Canada C-8 IUR. As most of you probably already know, they are sold without a BCG. To go with it I picked up a Daniel Defense bolt carrier group. Do I need to be checking the headspace before shooting it? Nobody around here sells the go/no go gauges, but I presume i could pick one up from Brownells.

Thanks

You bought high end brand name stuff, you dont need to check. I have built 2 AR's using good parts like you and did not check head spacing and both run great

I bought several "no-go" caliber gauges from Brownells and have used one in at least two dozen AR's and never had issue (most of those being built-up from parts.)
Safe to say you are ok.

However, I do like checking headspace in old/used/CHN firearms just to be safe. :)

This. Parts from very good manufacturers should be well within spec and should be good to go out of the box.

Just wondering - when a mfr assembles a rifle, do they use headspace gauges, or do they just assume that since their QC is good, there is no need? Bet they use headspace gauges on every rifle after proof, before shipping.
Should be OK. If you are comfortable with "should be" go for it.
I have the gauges, so I use them.
Only time I found a problem was with a Canadian made barrel, and there was insufficient headspace. Selective assembly solved that problem.

Safe to say yes your safe. I remember grabbing a C7 off the rack, then sticking my hand in a ammo can with various bolts and picking one out. I build 1/2 dozen AR never head spaced checked them.

I have seen C1A1 rifles being checked with a gauge after being reunited with bolts prior to going on the range. Different times.

Yup. And these rifles use parts made to a high standard by one premier manufacturer.

Mismatched parts from quality producers will likely fit nicely.

Even though there are all sorts of mixmasters out there assembled using parts from wherever, there does not seem to be a pattern of problems.

As I mentioned, the only time I have experience a headspace problem was with a Canadian made barrel.

Why does nobody use the search feature for ####s sake?

It seems every week there are more and more threads almost right on top of each other asking the very same questions...

Sorry Dietz I did do a search as I figured others would have asked the same question given how many people build ARs here, but the only thing that came up was someone in Calgary looking to borrow a no-go gauge. I searched for "headspace AR-15" Perhaps too specific?

I will do a simple brass check to double check everything is working a-ok. Meanwhile, I finished yesterday assembling everything. Pretty much ready to shoot now. As mentioned earlier, a C-8 iur upper receiver, with a Daniel Defense bolt carrier group. It also has a Magpul Moe + grip, Bravo B-5 stock, DD 1'oclock offset rail. Dlask Arms lower receiver. Vortex Diamondback 2-8X scope on Burris PEPR mount. The buffer tube, buffer, spring etc were nothing special, just the first I came across. Hope to get a new trigger in a month or so. Just the standard trigger now.

I bought my first one a year ago yesterday. From left, a Daniel Defense M-4V3 upper only, in 6.8SPC. Then a Daniel Defense M-4V5 in 5.56mm. An Aimpoint Pro and Magpul BUIS for sighting. The third is the C-8 IUR. Last but not least an Armalite AR-10A in .308, with a Vortex SPARC.
