Hey all my brother has an old sks that I think could use a look.

Anyone know where to find a headspace gauge online or otherwise (Calgary) for this thing?

It's likely just fine, but Brownnell's sells Clymer guages at $50.99US for the Go and No-Go. No exporting restrictions. Clymer will sell 'em direct though. $50 for the Go and No-Go.

I'm not trying to be a smart ass, but wouldn't headspace have to like really bad for it to be an issue in an sks. And given it's a military design, wouldn't it likely have a fairly generous headspace anyways, in order that it works in degrading conditions reliably. I've not heard of headspace issues in any 7.62x39 gun, but perhaps, that is due to most people using steel cases, which nobody reloads, so aside from tragic failures it's not really a big issue, and considering the SKS, AK and CZ858 are certainly 3 of the more robust auto's made that would really drop the occurance rate down further yet. I could however see it being a concern for one who is reloading brass cases, but it would only be noticeable if case life was found to dramatically short, with failure coming due to incipient case failures. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, as it certainly does, just not particularly often.

Personally, unless I was having problems, or installing a new barrel, I doubt headspace is anywhere near a top concern in a 7.62x39 gun. If you're really concerned, I'd agree with Homer76 and get a gunsmith to look it over, otherwise, chuck it in a tire with a string on the trigger for the first few rounds.
