so as I am getting into reloading I have been looking closer at my fired brass. I have a old Parkerhale 30-06. I was cleaning my 1 fired Hornady brass. Out of 75 pieces of brass maybe 10 have a faint ring mark a little ways up from the base. I did a google search and found it was signs of excessive head space. All 75 pieces were fired out of the same rifle. the line is very faint. the gun shoots great and I don't recall ever having a sticky bolt.

wondering if I should have the gun checked out.

I will take some pics of the brass in a little bit.

thanks

EDIT : upon close inspection they all have the slight line

Head space is established when the gunsmith assembles the barrel to the action and bolt.

Cartridge case head clearance is established when a re-loader manufactures a reload.

Either or both cause premature loss of brass and in severe cases rifle damage when a case ruptures.

You can not measure headspace by looking at or measuring fired brass. Head space is measured using steel go and no go gauges. The vast majority of American made brass is undersize and when fired it shows up... just like your cases...

Careful measurement would have to be made to determine if your chamber is too large in diameter (beyond saami specs), or with steel gauges to measure the headspace.
