I've got really poor hearing as it is, i cant afford to lose any more. Looks like at some point i will probably join an indoor range and i'd like to keep my hearing for as long as possible.

Can anyone recommend the best protective headset? Should i double up?

Thanks

I don't double up - too sweaty on my ears.

Go to an audiologist and get proper silicone ear plugs made. I got mine at work 10 years ago and they still work great, and they are comfortable enough to wear all the time when guns are being discharged. You never know when somebody might fire when you thought the range was 'quiet'.

Sundays are .22LR only at my range so I just wear one set on those days. Every other day I wear both earplugs (foam ones from amazon) and earmuffs (the electronic kind with the microphones so you can still hear range commands). Some days it's not so bad, but other days you're stuck right beside someone shooting their 556 with a muzzle-brake or their 10mm handgun and you're really glad for the extra ear pro.

double up indeed... you might be ok for 22LR with only one layer of protection, but be aware that decibel ratings are more complex than just adding up the db value of protection, and subtracting that to the average noise a gun shot makes...

tldr: double up: ear plugs and some kind of active noise reduction over the ear muffs.

Hey,

I double up, I use the Peltor 500 (AMAZON) and the Laser Lite ear plugs (AMAZON)

The electric headphones amplify the sound of people talking and cancels out gunshots, so I think it would actually helpful for someone with poor hearing.

Get a comfort one so you can wear it for 1~2 hour and you don't have to adjust it. Especially in a indoor range.
i have a few sets of earmuff but my favorite one is an Amazon 15$ which is very comfortable.
