Hearing protection that still allows good hearing for hunting

I am aware that there’s all kinds of new tech hearing protection on the market with noise cancellation etc… but I’m wondering how good they really are and do they allow good hearing to hear your surroundings while hunting ?
I always wear hearing protection while shooting for fun and practice .. but never have while hunting . I shot a coyote on Christmas Day with my .223 .. and my left ear is still ringing today 😬
Age is catching up to my old ears I suppose . I should probably try to protect what’s left of my hearing . Anyone have experience with a good option that doesn’t hinder your hearing of your surroundings, but still offers good protection when you pull the trigger ?

When I'm hunting I always wear Axil GS Extreme 2.0. The only negative is it's difficult localize sound. But that is a trade off with all electronic hearing protection.


If I'm at the range (partially enclosed and other shooters) I wear a set Peltors with a pair of Surefire Sonic Defenders underneath, especially when shooting indoors.

The noise cancelling muffs work great, except that for me, the muffs distort all sense of direction for sound when I'm moving. Great at the range, not so much on a stalk.

Yeah that’s kinda what I was most curious about is the quality of hearing for these noise canceling types. That makes sense that there’d be no sense of direction of the sound based on the fact that you’d be hearing through an in ear speaker I guess . It’s unfortunate that the technology isn’t quite there yet to give full directional hearing, but I suppose I’d rather have some hearing of my surroundings and also that protection they provide .
 
Unfortunately ... we are not allowed to use suppressors and where many other countries in Europe have acknowledge the negative affects on hearing when firing a gun ... and they changed the law to allow suppressors for hunting. And those are countries with very strict gun control laws.

There should be a much stronger lobby in Canada and to push for a change in law .... and to allow suppressors for hunting and for health reasons.

Hearing loss is permanent .... and it is a serious issue!!

Germany is one example and where the law was changed in 2020 and to allow for suppressors when hunting.

They provide excellent directional hearing, thanks to microphones on both sides, and the adjustable volume lets you clearly hear your surroundings while still protecting your ears. This makes them especially well-suited for hunting, where situational awareness is critical.

I use them myself when I’m out hunting, and they perform exceptionally well — plus, as a bonus, they help keep my ears warm in colder weather.
