I'm quite new to shooting, but I'm currently looking to get myself a decent headset for under 50$. I have no idea on what to buy.

Also, do you know if any brands make them in pink? (For my mom).

Thanks, Matt

I started with cheaper ones and kept creeping up till I got Impact electronics. I shoot with people and ipsc so it helps a lot. On the way I picked up peltors and browning and a couple of others I don't remember. They are there now for guest. If you are going to shoot with others and indoors spend the money on electronic would be my advice even if it means waiting a pay check or grab cheap set now and save up.

Browning carries women's pink ears. I have seen them at Le Barons.

What's the deal with those having a 3.5mm jack? Seems like it might be unsafe while at a range or in the field if you have your music going..

I think it depends on the environment you will do the shooting the most. if outdoor, the electronic ones others already said are good, with the advantage over the old fashion muff that you can hear people talking no problem. the non-electronic ones cannot do that.
however, if it's indoor, I would still recommend the old fashion non-electronic ones simply because it has higher NRR ratings. the electronic ones I have seen goes up to as much as NRR 33, while the non-electronic one I have is rated at NRR 37(Browning). also non-electronic ones are cheaper than electronic ones(given they are in the same NRR range and quality).

Then a common practice for people who regularly go shooting is to use ear plugs in addition to ear muff which gives you roughly extra NRR 5 protection. better than nothing.

Yep, my wife only wears pink gear (motorcycle jacket/helmet/gloves, shooting earmuffs/glasses) lol

This is the one I bought for her:

I highly suggest wearing earplugs under the muffs as well, especially if shooting at an indoor range. After getting my PAL just less than a year ago, I went to an indoor range with just the electronic muffs, was there for about 1.5 hours. To this day I'm still experiencing ringing in one ear.

+ to Howard lights. Been using them for two years. Best bang for your buck and I always doubleup with ear plugs. Better safe than sorry and when it comes to ears and eyes, if you can add protection why not.
I also find that depending on the eyewear you use, it sometimes breaks the solid seal of the earmuff, so having earplugs in prevents any damage as a result.
Happy Shooting mate

best deal would be the Impact Sport by Howard Leight. these were the first ones that i bought.

but if you save up a little money you can get the best of the best. Pro Ears. i never leave home without my Predator Gold. worth every penny.

I completely agree. I always double up with plugs. 22 NRR is not very high for hearing protection when shooting. I prefer the added protection of a 32 NRR earplug underneath. I find with the Impact Sports and plugs I get great protection, and with the volume all the way up I can still hear conversations and range commands.

Cheers

KillJoy....they could have the jack for a radio communication device....
Not everyone rocks out to Slayer while shooting for bullseye...
They should work , but do thye come in pink....as per the Op's request?

From my experience, the electronic impact sports are insufficient if shooting under cover or beside someone with muzzle break or short barreled center fire. As others have suggested, I use ear plugs as well in those situations. I found the low profile browning model which I purchased from Le Baron is a good non-electronic muff. I will also double up with ear plugs if there are other shooters near by. Sometimes your muff can get knocked ajar right when a canon goes off near by.
