Alrighty, I did a search and read up on the past heat shield topics and IMO, the majority of respondants felt a heat shield was a valuable addition to a shotgun. In my years of shooting I have accidently burned myself a couple times after firing the big boys so I certainly see the logic. My question is centered around weight. I have a Rem 870 with the following items coming in the mail, Knoxx Spec Ops stock, Mesa Tactical Saddle (6 shell) and a Hogue forend grip. So with the weight possibly already increasing, are there shields out there contructed of lighter weight materials? And if there are would they work as well?

If your putting a HS on it I assume it isn't a hunting or hiking rig. Why are you worried about weight? I didn't even notice a difference after installing mine.

I'm thinking this will be my all around shotgun so using it for hunting is certainly a possibility down the road (big game). And with back issues sometimes every lb/oz counts!

There have been some heat shields made out of some sort of plastic. But the metal ones seem more substantial.

Plastic? Sheesh is there anything it can't do? lol!

Any brand of shield in particular works best for the 870??

I would steer clear of the ATI shields, no experience personally but it's what I was told by some good guys. I bought a Mossberg shield for my 870, needed different bolts to attatch it and it was tight gooing on but the result was great.
