I'm thinking of making a heat shield for my 18" 870. It's going to be full length with a cut-out for the front sight. Just not sure if I'll cut slots or holes.

Just wanted to get a consensus of your opinions regarding heat shields.

If you fire 7 or 8 rounds of 12 gauge rapid fire and flip the gun over to load 7 more , when your hand touches the barrel you will know why they invented heat shields. But why would you make one when a TACSTAR universal metal heat shield only costs about $33 at www wholesalesports.com
 
Are you going for the MG-43 look? I'm curious why you would extend the heat shield beyond the forearm of the 870, as this is the area of the barrel normally touched.

The better heat shields give a nice finished look to a short barrel shotgun. The down side is that crap tends to get caught between the shield and the barrel. Since you are making your own, perhaps small holes or slots might help reduce this problem. Post pics when you're done.
 
I was torn between the "ok if it fits your shotgun" and the "cool but useless" choice.
I went with the former rather then the latter because they do serve some function especially with ghost ring sights and they do look very nice on some shotguns.
 
IMHO it's totally useless.

I've never burned my hands with mine at IPSC matches.

I've also fitted and had to modify pretty near everyone, to get them to fit and the shotgun to function properly.
 
I admit I like the look of some of them, but won't put one on mine cause I am worried about fit/function as RePete was saying... I would get the KAC rail/shroud if I could but it is a bit pricey and hard to get.
I'd rather get myself a pair of nomex gloves.
 
And we all know how often you dump 8 rounds of shotgun ammo.:D I don't know about you, but I don't see much use in one. Especially since I actually use my shotguns, and have never been burned yet.

I really enjoy shooting old vegetables with my 18" 1300 and after 20 mins. you really don't want to touch the barrel...some say I never get burnt but it can happen...and i have too few fingers to be blistering them up for fun...so far both i have tried have needed tweaking every once in a while..my non gunnut friends always seem to pick them up first when they are checking out my rifles....try one its going to give you another excuse to go shooting and "check funtion"

Those shotguns look very nice as they are. They probably shoot pretty nice too.

But this budget shotgun has a little more bling with the shield. It was inexpensive, fit perfectly and makes it a little bit more fun.

This shield is an ATI (steel) w/ ghost ring sights.
Since the barrel on the 88 is tapered the tangs at #1 can be adjusted (bent) to make a snug fit around that area. Then the two supplied bolts shown at #2 go under the barrel and are tightened which squeezes the tabs at that area together and secures it to the gun.
Pretty simple actually, so the whole install takes 5 minutes.

I like the tang idea (who doesn't like 'tang). Although I don't care for attachment 2. I have an idea that will look a lot cleaner. Stay tuned.
 
I do not consider the heat shield useless at all. It will protect your hands when you are gobbling up shells at the range knocking down bowling pins, steel plates or whatever, against time, but they also protect the gun when it is subjected to a hard use environment. Fortunately my 590 has a heat shield, and the heat shield has protected the barrel on a number of occasions.
